1825 Sovereign | Currency or Proof/Proof Like

I picked up this coin recently and whilst there is a lot of hazing, it seems to have a proof or proof like finish...  I haven't come across this before on non proof coins, any views or comments? Is it currency or proof? Anyone have a similar coin with a similar finish?

looks like the 1825 milled edge proof, Marsh 10A.

Thats what I was hoping, but have had an expert say possibly not due to weaker strike and lack of crispness. Have you come across currency coins of this age with proof like fields? 10A is rated R4...

NGC & NCS

definitely, conserved and graded, if its not a proof (and I hope it is!) then its still a great coin and a lovely addition to my early collection. Its perplexing as ive never seem a proof like coin from these early years...

I have a 1/2 1887 gold proof sov, it was quite tatty looking, after NCS conserved it, it looked like new coin.

@Xander @shawy2510 @sovereignsteve does anyone have a nice image of an 1825 shield in EF or better condition I can compare?

Is there anythig on the NGC or PCGS sites?

Most coins from that era tend to be a far cry from proof like although I have seen a bare head double that was very shiny but that was all over, it didn't have that kind of proof like field that yours has. The reverse on your coin looks especially convincing.

Had a look on the census and there have been a few proofs graded, but unless i'm missing something, you can't link to the actual coins, I'm guessing you need the registration number to use the verify tool. Frustrating! I'm more convinced than not that it is the reeded edge proof! the fields are just too proof like and although there are signs of wear, it's in lovely condition.

That helps a little! is there any proof like finish in the fields, I can read a newspaper reflection clearly in the fields of the one I have. Although there is at present a lot of hazing on the coin is definitely looks like a mirror proof finish.

Great coin by the way... Lovely grade, hoping for same or maybe if not proof, then 58+ or *

No proof-like fields on mine, which is why yours presents more like a proof, even with the hazing. Which, if I recall, we have seen on some of the other proof examples. Here’s hoping for yours being of a high grade proof through conservation and grading!!
