Gold 50p Proofs - Worth Grading?

Mike

Recommended Posts

With the current (seemingly endless) run of limited edition 50ps by the RM, What are peoples thoughts on grading of these coins?  Given that they come in  unique presentation box, is grading likely to add value or make minimal difference?

I can’r Decide whether to get Paddos, Snowman and Gruffalo graded or not - I’m not looking to flip them, but keep for long term collectibility

I'm no expert but I can't see grading adding any extra value to any of these three coins. I haven't graded my Paddies, just given them the careful once over when they were received to make sure the Mint's QC didn't fail as it so often does, keep them carefully, and take them out of storage now and then to enjoy them in their original presentation :)

You have done very well to get a gold Snowman and Gruff imo (I have neither), lucky you!

Perhaps there's a chance that in the future a full run of 70s might have some additional value slightly beyond the sum of its parts, no idea.

Imo we are all 'flying' somewhat blind here. @Pipers interested in your thoughts given your thread of yesterday which raised the interesting question of grading :)

I aim to grade my gold 50ps. They can add value but get lower than a 70 & no you would not add value. I do mine for my own collection & if I did sell I always buy the same coin raw & regrade.

Or sell them to me that would be easier :D

Has anyone sent in a coin that certified 70? I've seen many coins that look like they qualified 70

For the Gruffalo it’s too soon, not been out long enough to have gone through NGC process

Its up to the collector obviously, but my opinion is this :-

The 50p Gold set that was just released has a very low mintage only fool would send them off to NGC, the collector who got up waited eagerly paid a hefty sum for the product and has a fine set in his collection why would he slab them???  Plus the more coins the collector gets the better he will become at grading himself.

I do not think i would grade a proof 50p i have 2 one from hgm and one from an auction, both have slight nicks on third side though the rest coins  are spot on.  I have to add i bought them cheap. This is my choice not to slab them.  People can do what they want.
