  1. Are you sure there will also be a proof coronation sovereign? (in addition to the SotD BU one); What the RM states it's not so clear to me It is indeed mentioned (quoting) .::" In addition, the collection will also include a very limited number of Sovereigns struck on 6 May 2023, the day of the coronation, as the perfect way for collectors to commemorate this momentous occasion. This is the first opportunity to own a 2023 Sovereign. The rest of the Coronation Sovereign collection will be released later in the year and will be available in a variety of Proof editions.
  2. they managed to ruin the beauty and the charm of a coronation... i m spechless what was wrong in just following the bloody tradition and issuing a coronation set like in the past?
  3. and that's only page 2... thing is.... this aint going to be over with release (and delayed delivery); as you may have noticed from another thread.... then there will be a couple hundreds of pages of people freaking out as they find the smallest imperfection and their coin/sets are not grading PF70...
  4. my apologizes... i joined TSF almost 2 years ago (if i remember correctly) and i really missed this section of the forum... guess late is better than never tho... i found this lovely forum randomly as i was looking for a sovereign online dedicated platform where i could share knowledge and comments. I m not a PM stacker but a collector and i m of course in love with sovs! Unfortunately i m very far away from the UK and after brexit everything has got terribly complicated. That's the main reason for i havent upgraded so far my subscription to any silver or better status. I'd love to buy from TSF members but distance and customs make things complicated. I like to contribute though, when possible, with pics, comments and new threads (about sovs, what else?); i m italian but (numismatically speaking!) my heart belongs to the quee.... ehm to the king!
  5. i cant find comments about an hypothetical coronation set... is that something completely unrealistic?
  6. less than a month to the coronation day... and still no official info on forthcoming 2023 issues... considering that (at some point they will have to get back to routine...) in November 2023 the Proof sovereign 2024 will be issued... there are at least 2 different sovereigns to be released soon. The Coronation (Sotd on the 6 of may)? and the standard 2023 proof/bullion one... i also hope they will have coins ready within a month from official release... jesus christ its sooo depressing realizing such a milestone like the sovereign being in so bumbling hands
  7. thanks a lot for this content. I am preparing an excel doc with all sovereign (i m only focussing on the whole sovs at the moment) issued since the RM decided to milk us dry... Proof - Bullion - Sotds - Bu I am basically starting from 2013 (the first 2 Sotds as far as i know, the Coronation 60th anniversary 02-06-13 and Prince George birth 22-07-13)
  8. hi all, id like to have if possible a bit of background on these sovereigns. From which year RM started minting them? I have a reference (and pic) of 2019; could that be then from 2019 onwards? thanks in advance for any assistance on that

    Slab...over coin

sometimes, as someone already pointed out, a slab its a guarantee. Especially if you cant go phisically to an auction, or check a coin with your hands/eyes. i myself "had" to buy some slabbed coins, especially during the first months of lockdown (summer-autumn 2020) when moving was difficult if not impossible. A couple of times i got disappointed, when i finally got the coin. Lesson learnt. More in general i feel this slab mania is changing the word of numismatic for good. And not in the right sense

    Slab...over coin

why i got the feeling that more and more stackers/collectors are buying and, rather than enjoying their purchase, are immediately taken into this PF70 or MS top pop madness? I understand this is an extremely expensive hobby, and it is more than reasonable to protect our investments.. but it looks like a shame nowadays getting a PF69 back from NCG or PCGS.. (its also good to bear in mind that its perfectly natural that only a small % of a specific proof mintage get the highest grade) I dont understand this rush in sending a recently aquired coin to get its plastic sarcophagus. I queued like thousands of people recently to get my Jubilee, and few months after my memorial. I have no clue if they would get a pf70 or not, but to be honest i couldnt care less. Maybe, if and when i ll decide to sell... but why now? This late slab rush is turning us blind guys. We should enjoy more our coins and not focus on those bloody figures/plastic box..
  11. i m not sure britannia and cazlikescoins got the meaning of my message... had no intention to deny the beauty and the magic of this particular coin. I myself love the idea of having (1980) a birthday sovereign... the point is about the crazyness we are now experiencing about standard sovereigns like gillicks. I dont see any difference between today (2023) and few years ago, when these coins were considered just as bullion ones (i dont consider the passing of Queen Elizabeth II THE factor behind this insane raise in prices) and i dont get the point in paying silly prices for top pop grading when there are dozens and dozens of top pop and these figures are updated almost daily...
  12. i m sorry to ruin the party.... but i really dont understand this madness about gillicks. They are normal bullion sovereign. If we sum the 10 years as a whole we get to more than 45 million !! of pieces... fortyfive millions! of coins that never circulated. 99% of them are in Mint state. a couple of days ago, a 1957 in MS66 (NGC) at Coin Cabinet fetched 1700 gbp hammer (this is 2000 euros); for that amount you can actually buy 4.5 "normal gillicks". NGC declares 26-27 MS66 slabbed 1957. and with PCGS i guess we get to 50ish coins with that grading. Not really a rarity imho.... And considering the current rush in sending these bullion to slab... i bet within an year there will be dozens of brand new MS66 pieces around.... do you understand guys that with such behaviour we are feeding this insane market? We cant then cry for current prices.. gillicks are gillicks. BULLION rounded pieces of gold. we are creating artificially a numismatic value to something that it's not numismatic
  13. i thought TB series was going to duplicate QB one. i dont get the point in releasing the first 2 and then stopping? or changing the scheme.. are they definitively gone mad?
  14. thanks for the kind reply. I m not after PF70 because i m not willing to pay the large premium they attract. PF69 or no slab would be my preference. Thanks in any case.
  15. good morning, as per title, i am after the following proof sovs; 2006-2007-2008-2009-2010-2011 (not necessarily in slab, but of course they have to be flawless. I m not UK based but i can provide a London delivery address ; cheers
  16. that happened already in 2015, with fourth and fifth obverse of QEII. my guess is that there will be a SoTD on the 6 May (and another one to celebrate KCIII 75th birthday later on this year) with a special reverse, and a traditional 2023 Sov as part of the coronation set
  17. there's an insane run going on, where everyone tries to buy, slab and get the ultra super duper maxi fantastic wow PF70 (on modern proofs) or a TOP POP ms 66-67 (on modern bullions); and this is just DESTROYING the market (when i see a gillick going for 2 grands i really turn sad).
  18. 1) i havent on modern sovereigns, but maybe i just havent checked them that closely before. 2) i wouldnt consider it "an error", or in any case i wouldnt personally consider it something that would add value on the coin. And that would apply both ways (if i was to keep for myself, or i was to sell it) 3) i d call it doublestruck too 4) i'd return it and ask for a replacement
  19. hi all, when is usually released the bullion version of 1oz gold coin (after the proof one is out?) i ve noticed on the Royal Mint webiste that the proof Bull of Clarence (300 pieces) 1oz gold coin is on sale
  20. assuming i pay today a 1oz gold coin 11% over spot (around 1690 gbp when the 1oz today stands at 1520 gbp); what would be the re-buy price that very same dealer would pay me tomorrow? that is the crucial information to me; if they pay spot i am even more convinced it is a huge mockery. if they pay spot + something it is already different...
  21. i understand, that's what we all hope at the end of the day... nothing personal of course and my comment wasnt pointing at any of the users that wrote in this thread. Thing is, when it comes to stacking, the goal should always be to pay the minimum spread possible above spot price. Otherwise it is another thing. And thats i am afraid to say a huge success of the RM (and other mints around the world); to create a brand new hybrid half stackers-half numismatic market, where people pay large premiums on something that should't carry it on
  22. unfortunately the real madness is the artificial market that has been created on ounces. They were first minted just as a different way to stack gold, with a little to 0% premium over spot. Nothing numismatic, nothing that should attract more than 3-4-5% premium over spot. What is happening today is, i am afraid to say, just a huge mockery. You can create the fanciest ounce ever, but bullion is and bullion will remain. And people that pay an unreal premium over spot should be aware that (if and when they will re sell it) dealers will payback exactly what is worth in gold. No (zero, niente, nada, niet) premium.
  23. at least you are UK based. think about poor lambs like me if (and when...) they receive a fail coin...
  24. As the 6 of May (coronation day) approaches, id like the big boys here on the forum to start sharing thoughts and feelings (nothing under embargo vetoes of course); i read about a coronation proof, eventually a SoTD but i wonder if that would be THE 2023 (proof) sovereign instead. And i also wonder about the coronation set. That is an incredibly fascinating and powerful piece of history that will be written soon. I'd prefer the 2023 proof being part of the coronation set to be honest. Cant afford multiple "unique" treasures this year..
