What a beauty. Not seen on TSF for some time. I have one but not seen mine for some time as it’s in safe storage. But great picture s @9x883 & nice to be reminded just nice one of my coins is. Good luck.

I forgot the questions in the Sovereign survey, but they had mentioned several half-assed reasons for SotDs including memorial of QE II’s 100th Birthday, KC III’s 5th anniversary of accession / coronation, anniversaries etc. of old monarchs, blah blah.
I’d rather they didn’t do any SotD this year. The Sovereign scene is saturated as it is.

A poor description nevertheless. No offence intended so thanks E for that. Indeed, your knowledge (particularly on the modern sovereign) has elevated you to coin Guru.

2017 was such a busy year with 3 SOTDs, though I note that Rich’s book indicates that only the first SOTD of the year appears to have been a complete sell out.
I recall that there was confusion at the time of how you would go about distinguishing between the first 2017 SOTD and the third one, as both had milled edges. Only the middle SOTD struck on 1 July 2017 has the plain edge.
Looking back at my notes, the 6 Feb SOTD is almost identical to the 20 Nov one but the 6 Feb one apparently has narrower ribbing on the reeded edge than the 20 Nov one. Geeks like @westminstrel will hopefully already know this of course.
I don’t have any of them myself, and although I like my coins slabbed, I think I would appreciate the beauty of the plain edge 2017 SOTD in its original capsule in this case, as I’m guessing that unique feature is largely hidden in a slab.
I apologise to @westminstrel for calling you a geek. Modern Sovereign Specialist sounds much better!

Glad to see that I’m not the only one. In my case it’s doing some business with Chards when I’m in NW England.

This is where somewhere like Atkinsons is good. I don’t trust posting anything so i will drive to their secure unit and sell some sovereigns etc. yes i could get maybe £5 more per sov on the forum but the peace of mind is worth it, not to mention its one transaction not several. Plus proof of sale if it’s a large amount can come in handy if you need to prove where the funds have come from.

Apologies folks but I too would like to go slightly off topic regarding sending coins by special delivery. I’ve noticed a few times when stood in the queue at the Post Office that the lady behind the counter asks customers can you tell me what the package contains? I’d never dream of stating a gold coin for obvious reasons, but if you were confronted by the same question what answer would you give (apart from calling her a nosey cow)?  Thank you.

In all honesty I prefer to deliver my coins to the recipient by hand direct. I drive down to NW England to drop off my coins for grading with GoldDigger Dave and return to collect them. The one coin I’ve sold meant a drive to NE England when I sold a coin back privately to the person I’d originally bought it from several years earlier.
Obvious this can’t continue forever more if I want to sell anything further afield. Hence my earlier question regarding the over inquisitive lady at the Post Office.

A while ago I attempted to claim and RM wanted proof of sale (ie auction site address item number) and original purchase receipt with a view to compensating original purchase price not sale price. Would suck if you bought low and sold high 😵‍💫
Worth bearing in mind, if others know different please share.
PS Im not trying to derail thread, and agree with SD its the seller who needs to assume risk. Just pointing out what the risk may be.

I lost a 1/4 brit a year or so ago posted SD. And had to claim it back. To some £400 is a nightmare. To me it was nothing short of traumatic. The stress was next level, not helped by going round in circles with the RM.
I stress EVERY time i buy or sell now. God only knows how im going to handle selling up. Ill cross that bridge when i get to it.
SD to me is next day delivery and decent tracking. Not much else.

It has zero baring on whether something is insured.
I have been asked by post office workers many times and each time I say, "nothing prohibited" and if they ask again to clarify I say I'm not telling you anything else. Captain subtext says "mind your business and jog on"
    Works every time for me

I am a collector and happy to be. I consider what i am paying as numismatic value over spot as a fee to enjoy something rare, or uncommon, full of history or symbolic value. Still, When and if i will ever decide to sell i am pretty sure i ll get all my money (if no more) back
