  1. Nice looking medallions.  Didn't bother looking at them myself as I don't have a clue about their value and the estimates can sometimes be over the usual market price quite considerably.  Occasionally they are below but it's more common for them to be just a little on the high side.  Of course people sometimes seem to forget to factor in the overheads or get carried away and items go for stupid prices.

I missed a few by one bid but nothing I really wanted and the others I was interested in went for way too much for my liking.  I think I saw the same coin going for more after a better condition one had struggled and went for less.

I was also surprised the counterstamped 4 and 2 reales went for the prices they did given there was supposedly no fractional counterstamped dollars issued by the mint according to many sources.

Blind purchase so fingers crossed for some ok ones :D

Are you sure purchase is the correct word and you haven't been raiding bank vaults or making offers collectors can't refuse? :)

You must have numerous copies of all the more common dates by now?

  3. SG86, so many young heads and look to be in decent condition as well!  Not that I'd pile them like that in case of damage.   Haven't been plundering the mint or the BoE? :0

CornishFarmer, Is that the indian head that they had on Thursday?  I didn't see mention of a liberty head then.

  4. Is the top of the crown as high and buried in the edge as much as on the 87s you have?

With that many sovs you might even find other unlisted or poorly catalogued variations.  Have you photographed the jebs to see how many variations you can find?

80 jubilees alone is a lot of sovereigns. :)

  5. Of course those sovs being BU instead of proof I guess they won't be inspected as well.  In theory at least but knowing RM who knows if they even inspect their proofs properly now.

Looks like there could be a light scratch at the rear of the horses back leg as well and maybe one even smaller one towards the tail.

Maybe your just thinking of the BofE notes when you say Brit notes are uninteresting?  There are other British banknotes and some are quite nice.  The British Linen bank. Commercial Bank and then National Commercial Bank of Scotland, North of Scotland bank, Union Bank of SCotland, Clydesdale and the other current Scottish banks.  Then the NI banks and Isle of Man notes from a number of banks.

$5 Indian Head from HGM.  Didn't think I would get it as I took so long looking up the stats to work out the % over spot since HGM no longer display it.  I missed out on the $2.5 a week or 2 ago for the same reason.

Australian Domed Southern Sky 1oz Gold Coin from the New Zealand Mint.  Very nice packaging.

So you got the indian head.  By the time I noticed it and went to check out I forgot to tick the terms box and had to go through it again only to find it was gone.

Should see this coin in a couple of days but looked up the PCGS cert pic.

It looks promising and nicer than the eBay pic.

Not knowing those coins and just looking at it as any other coin I would never have guessed it would make MS62   Looks to be a lot of rubbing/wear on the fields and the dies must have been worn or poorly made.

No I'm not saying that, yours is an IEB if that's what you want to call it, although it's not generally referred to as such, but as an imperfect J

I thought I could see a tiny remnant of the top of the loop on the j and that it might just be worn?  Looking at the marks on the field just below the jeb and elsewhere.

From Atkinsons?  I looked at those but decided £189 was a bit too much for the lowest mintage one and the recent ones didn't look in that great a condition to me so I just gave them a miss.  They are far from my favourite coins and much prefer something with a bit of age and history.

I recently mentioned that I don't like buying slabbed coins that much as it can make it harder to spot fakes only for others to post that it isn't a problem with slabbed coins.  As for having to return coins to the seller I guess this makes it less likely you can claim a real coin is fake and keep it for free?

  11. Is that a picture of a 1/25 angel?  I didn't know you got them.  I thought it was only 1/20 up.  I considered buying the piedfort version a little while back but decided it was a bit small for a piedfort so the extra thickness wouldn't stand out so much.

I wouldn't touch 1/10th's or quarter sovs with a barge pole. Modern tat, bought by people with more money than sense. The Royal Mint must love anyone buying gold this way. Rubbing their hands all the way to the bank. ...Although if you can buy for a few percent over spot, then like any gold, snap em up.

However, for the same money as a modern quarter sovereign, you can easily buy a Victorian shield half sovereign. In my opinion a much much better buy, and will keep it's value much better than the modern stuff.

I'd like to know where you can pick up a shield half at the same price as a quarter sovereign!  You can pick up a quarter for around £70 if you are willing to wait or a bit more but still under £100 at almost any time but a shield half for less than £130 now is very unlikely and £140 upwards is much more common now.

My first shield back 1/2 sovereign YH  1871 and a 2015 full sovereign in mint packaging courtesy of HGM

So it was you who got it!  Did you buy it on Monday afternoon?  I noticed one in stock then and phoned to find it was an 1871 so I bought it straight away but received an 1892.

  14. Hopefully things will settle down a bit soon.  Maybe some politician will pipe up with some sort of plan.

Is anyone here really ready to stop buying and wouldn't most of us preferred to continue buying at the sort of prices we've had recently?

Maybe it will be worth a dabble on some of the shares that have dropped considerably like construction?  I don't think I'd risk buying banking shares but I see mining shares have increased recently which is hardly surprising.

Sniping is dangerous as you can end up paying too much but I think the one I bough was good value at £275 )) why didn't you bid more ?

It doesn't seem to matter how much I bid in many cases as people still snipe so unless I really want something or have some spare time to watch the end of an auction I usually just put in what I would be happy paying.  Sometimes you don't expect to win and end up paying a great price, or just get outbid, but all too often the price shoots up to a very high price in the last seconds.

I only wish I'd bid on the ones that went for around £220 to £230 lately.  Then again if I'd bid on those would probably have ended up selling for over £250. :)

Shame about those scratches and marks around the cheek area as that is a lovely coin. Good place to buy, Andreas has a lot of shields at the moment and ebay is currently cheap.

So it's you pair who keep sniping me at the last minute on the sovs I've bid on. :)

Some jump up in price quite a bit just at the end but others go for good prices.  I thought I was going to end up winning a lot of shields all at once after I was locked out of Paypal earlier today because of a 2 step authentication problem.

  17. I got 500g of pre 47 scrap I picked up for £75 plus a few quid postage yesterday.  Some pre 20 stuff in there including some pretty well worn ed vii florins and vf shilling. Unc george vi stuff of course but that is to be expected.  Not a bad deal if there aren't any forgeries in there.
