Also if you end up with a fake unexpectedly, you're only 10s of £s out of pocket and not 100s.

My idea behind buying some Silver was to hold it at least 10 years.

    Hello
I am new to stacking and have purchased a few ounces of silver mainly coins and some gold. Hoping to find great advice on here from Veteran stackers.
    Reasons I'm stacking
    1) Long Term for addition to pension.
    2) If needed to barter at some point in time.
    3) To leave to my children.
I will probably be asking loads of questions over next few weeks and months.

Sovereigns and 1/2 oz for me until I can buy 1 oz without having to save up for a while.

Hello Saxon and welcome to The Silver Forum!
I’ll be straight up to the point: if it’s for your children and you don’t want an unknown cloud above your head dwindling whether or not silver will break just stick to bullion gold sovereigns. Gold will always store wealth and it’s much safer to invest in compared to silver.  Nothing else. Your children will thank you and they will benefit greatly from it.
Silver I see as a hobby and collecting specific size coins or series to your liking. The Uk VAT kills any motivation for a stacker to focus purely on silver. This is just my opinion. Second hand silver is a different ball game but fun.
Also feel free to check out the awesome Silver Premium Members Hangout thread once you upgrade 😎you won’t regret it.
Good luck and enjoy the adventure of stacking precious metals! 👍

@JohnA1 It is a long term plan i have including leaving some to my Children. I have been purchasing with spare money so it's not anything I will miss so leaving it for 10 years + will be no bother for me. I will definitely be buying some Sovereigns and 1/4oz Britannias. At some point in next 18 months I will probably splash out on a 1oz gold Britannia, especially if I land a new role at work that I've applied for.

I've bought some Silver and Gold but I'm thinking that Silver due to the premium and VAT may not be a great investment. Gold I'm sure is but I'm not so sure about Silver. Fortunately I've not spent a fortune.

This post is really for all non paying TSF members. However it will probably resonate with a lot of paid members too.
***I haven't been asked to write this but it is a kind of testimonial***
When I started buying precious metals years ago it wasn't a problem, as I would buy current year silver and gold bullion, and directly from very reputable online dealers. As the years went on I started getting more interested in older coins, sovereigns to be specific. However I had very little, to no knowledge on what to look for. So as I started to do research online and TSF posts kept coming up. So one day I decided to join. It's great that you can get so much information on here and post questions without being a paid member. I learned so much just from being in the background and reading all the new threads and responses.
So a little time later after becoming acquainted to the site, I bit the bullet and started a new topic. I can't remember what my first question was, but all I can remember that after all the responses, it saved me making a very costly purchase on a coin. I continued to stay on as a free member for a little while longer, mostly because I didn't have the time to be more active, and  then found I had to ask another question. Again loads of responses and very helpful advice from members.
I then took a moment and thought to myself. If it wasn't for TSF, I could have lost a lot of money, and also not made purchases that I would have normally passed on. So I decided to become a silver premium member. I pay £5.99 a month (the price of a coffee and croissant in London) and off course with becoming a paid member I can buy and sell on here, but that wasn't my intention. I knew it would be very unlikely that I would buy much due to the fact that I currently live in Portugal. I did it because I wanted to support the forum, due to how members have helped me. On a side note, if you are in the UK and are interested in buying PM's (Precious Metals), then there are some amazing deals to be had on here. I cry sometimes at how cheap things are, compared to dealers, ebay and over here in Portugal. I really don't care if the owner is making a big profit or not. They are providing a safe, friendly and very helpful service, that I hope to be part of for many years to come.
So for the sake of £5.99 a month, I would highly suggest you get your credit/debit cards out, buy a premium membership, and support TSF. It's money well spent and if you're buying PM's. you'll save that several times over when you make a purchase.
    Just my personal TSF experience.
Peace and love to all at TSF 🙏 (God knows we need it)

Budget wise I don't have a set budget but have just been using whatever I have spare that I can comfortably afford. My plan was to hold it for 10+ years as a hedge against inflation.

If you had never stacked precious metals before would you begin to stack Silver in 2024? If not why not and what would you invest your money in?

Consider premium membership... you'll save so much vs the dealer prices, you'll wonder why you ever bought from them
In fairness, they're not all bad and often have great deals - membership also gets you access to the compare prices tool.
