REILsilver got a reaction from JamesH in 2023 proof sovereigns
Update- In the end, as some suggested, I went for the one I liked and got the IOM sovereign.
There are a few reasons I chose this over the royal mint.
    • I liked the of the very limited mintage
    • personally, the design appealed to me more.
    • I can pay this off in instalments, leaving me a better budget to play with over the coming summer months.
    • At the present time, CGT isn't a major concern for me, yet.
This being said, I appreciate all of your advice and will definitely be taking on board moving forward in the world of stacking and collecting. 😆 thanks again.

Yep, Sovereigns minted in & after 1837 are CGT exempt. TSF is the cheapest place to buy 99% of the time. If you would rather go through an online dealer then Hatton Garden Metals' 'Best Value' Sovereigns tend to be the best in price (when also costing in delivery fees).

It really is worth emphasising that the word/name 'Sovereign' is not trademarked. Anyone can create a coin and call it a Sovereign - whether that is in the UK or elsewhere. The only Sovereigns worth paying any attention to are the ones released by the Royal Mint.

Like I said I am very new to this, I've been collecting/stacking for 2/3 weeks. My knowledge on the whole selling stacking and what's popular and what's not is very, very limited. Most coming from TSF.
As a result of this, I have been purely buying what I like. The IOM coin, in my opinion, looks really good and with a very limited mintage, unlike the other coronation coins, as far as i know?
Investment may have been the wrong word. However, when seeing coins like the 2002 jubilee sovereign for example, one is lead to believe that any of the coronation coins could? This is most likely my lack of knowledge, leading me to this conclusion.
So, in short, it would be a nice coin to own for a short period, to use to help grow my stack in the hopefully not so distant future?
Kost of the terms you guys use are alien to me. For example, only last night did i realise that the SOTD wasn't short for the sale of the day.🙈
I have already made silly mistakes along the way. Luckily, no really expensive ones as of yet🤞which is some of the reasoning for my question.

All the bars come with COA’s. The BYB and TSF bars come with little velvet pouches too (rumour has it that BYB hand-stitches each one of these with a 999 silver needle under the light of a waxing moon, but I can’t corroborate that…😂).
Payment by BT or PPFF please. If you buy over the weekend these will go out on Tuesday now.
    Thanks!

This may be a silly question, but who’s to say the government can’t- won’t also change the rules as to what is CGT exempt? 🤔

What if you sell pier to pier, as in on this site? Can you avoid the CGT?
Or do you get spotted by the bank when your balance inflates?
Can you avoid CGT if you are only selling currency (brits n sovs)?

You are subject to anything over the value of £3000 thats not capital gains tax free thats in 2 years time

Say the market goes crazy and you a have significant stack.  In Two years time when CGT threshold is reduced to £3000 anything you sell over the TOTAL amount of £3000  per annum you will have to pay Capital gains tax at between 10-37% depending on your earnings.
So Reilsilver has a stack of coins he bought that arent capital gains tax:
He paid £25 an oz for some silver say 500oz = £12500 - silver mooned and went to £40 an Oz and he sold it at profit of £8000 - so of that £15 profit  per oz you will have to pay between 10-37% depending on your income. The first £3000 is the threshold is free, but the further £5000  you will be taxed.
But if you buy Capital gains tax free silver or gold you dont have pay it! And still have your annual threshold to use on something else!
So you would have to pay £500 CGT at lower rate  so youve only made £4500
    *** I am not a financial / tax advisor
but the highest rate You will have to pay £3150 so youve only made  £1850

Buy  because you like it!  Investment no. Can you explain your research into proving this is an investment?  Or is it wishful thinking?  Imo wishful thinking is zero ground to be making a purely investment decision.

We all end up paying for our numismatic education so make the right decision fit yourself.

Can you explain or do you know the difference between a liability and an investment?  Not a trick question many people who stack silver can’t answer this one.

I’d say the Royal Mint Sovereigns are the quintessential Sovereign. Every other Mint that strikes a “sovereign” Is just using the name for their version of an approximately 8gm gold coin.
Yes, £895, for what is essentially a knock off, is ridiculous.
No matter the mintage, the there will almost always be a better collectibility factor, a more genuinely associated numismatic tradition, and a bigger market for the Royal Mint Sovereigns.
You would be much better off spending that £895 on the upcoming Coronation Proof Sovereign.

I have this gold "Millionaire's Collection" set, consisting of 16x coins each of just over 4g 22ct gold, which are reproductions of coins that most of us will never have the opportunity to see, let alone own. Some truly iconic coins and I have to say a well executed set struck to proof standard and presented in a glass topped case with three layers. Each coin has a COA with information on the coin and its history in a leather folder.
8 of the coins are plated with Rhodium
Produced and sold by London Mint Office
Asking just £3050 posted Special Delivery which is less than 3% above current spot price.
