Shipping Sovereigns - Question

Hi All

I will be selling some sovereigns shortly and obviously will send special delivery. My question is whether extra insurance is needed and do you need to disclose what you are sending to be covered?

The postal staff do not write what you are sending so no need to tell them what is in the package. If ever asked I just say jewellery. From the three rate you be paying they will know that it is worth something.   Do not try and save a few pounds by paying less than what is being sent.  As a guide 1 Sovereign is £7.35, 2 will be £8.35 and 3+ will be £10.35 as of today. From the 2nd April all prices will go up and the last one will go to £18. 

Do yourself a favour and double envelope your coins.  I tend to use cardboard, smaller padded envelope( these could be recycled from a previous purchase) and last and large padded envelope. No one can hear of feel what is inside. 

Good luck with your sales and hopefully there be some bargains to be had.

Be careful not to put more value than the insurance on the package.

If you put £3000 worth in a £2500 value package it could invalidate any claims you need to make.

Split them up.

As Spyder said though, no need to tell post office staff what is inside and make sure to package well.

I have had some innovative SD packaging from TSF members.

Recently I received some Sovs that were wrapped in a DVD box.

The reason they ask is to make sure the contents aren’t on the prohibited list (batteries / guns etc). So you can either say ‘nothing on the prohibited list’ and attract attention, or just lie and say ‘work ID’ or ‘legal paperwork’. They aren’t keeping a list of what to steal (hopefully) and will probably handle more valuable things than a couple of sovs on a daily basis.

Use a large letter box and pay for postage online and get the postman to collect it from your door, all you do is tick a box to say you're not sending prohibited stuff

Yes I've sent a few sovereigns now through special delivery and I just say Sovereign coins. I'm sure nothing gets noted but I always feel like If I don't specify, it invalidates the compensation if lost. 

Pretty sure its just so you're not sending prohibited items.

They do not write it down, like you said, so how will it invalidate a compensation claim. It not like the staff can remember what you said and plus compensation is done online at not at the post office

Yes I'm aware the situation wouldn't arise, It's just a old superstitious theory that never went away.
