Melting Silver Problem

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I’m new to melting silver down and wanted to practice before I start casting it for jewellery. I bought an electric furnace and for my first try I put the silver in and heated it then when it became liquid I put borax to remove any impurities. When I pour the silver into water it comes out discoloured what am I doing wrong? Or is it the silver?

Presumably this is sterling silver?

Sterling oxidizes with the air when poured so you have to clean and polish it before it's shiny.

999 silver you don't need a flux or borax just pour and go!
