Is Palladium worth adding to the stack?

Hello all,

So I just picked up a 1g bar of palladium, mainly just so I could see what all the hype is about & I thought it would make an interesting video. 

What are peoples thoughts on palladium as an investment & do any of you have it in your stack?

No, for a few reasons -

1. Here in the UK it attracts VAT, which ganks it as an investment.  Silver is cheap, and there are some items you can buy and sell on the secondary market without excessive spreads or transaction costs, but even with silver it's easy to overpay and wear a fair bit of seller premium and therefore value at risk.
2. It's even less liquid than Platinum - most people wouldn't buy (for example) a 1oz Palladium bar.  If you had to flog 20oz of Palladium (or Platinum for that matter) in a hurry it would be quite hard to do that without selling back to a dealer and taking a bath on the dealer spreads and VAT.
3. I think an assumption that you can flog it to other stackers has a slight whiff of greater fool theory.  This kind of works with silver because it's ubiquitous and many people want it, but not so much with Palladium.

In jurisdictions with no VAT it might be a bit more cost effective, or one could go through a market like BullionVault or maybe an ETF to get some exposure if you think it's underpriced.  Stacking physical Palladium doesn't really look like much of a goer as a store of wealth or an investment, though, at least not in the UK.

You can buy it second hand though dealers to reduce the premiums via the VAT-margin scheme, and it has come down in price a lot recently. Not for me, but could be useful for some diversification.

As others have mentioned though, I think it would be difficult to sell quickly other than to a dealer, it is a significantly smaller market.

I would if I thought it was easy enough to find a buyer. 

A mate of mine (here we go) works at Johnson mathey, they had a production line there for catalytic converters and a few years ago when the government announced its emotions targets they moved the line to Japan. Within the last year they have had a new one installed and are now making them again, this along with sunak doing a U-turn points it may be a good buy.

I have a few palladium eagles (US mint coin) which is a beautiful coin, but I doubt they would go for much over spot.  Palladium seems to be very volatile due to its primary use in the automotive industry.  Right now it’s back to 2019 levels and showing no signs of a big recovery.  
 

At least you’re looking while the price is down and not chasing a ride up

How much did you pay for the 1oz coin if you don’t mind sharing?

@365DaysofSilver I paid anywhere from $1300 to $2200 USD.  The photos aren’t too good, but it’s a classic design and I have them in a burnished finish, proof, and reverse proof.  
 

They used the design off of the old mercury dime - one of my favorites of all time.

It might be fun to collect a 1g bar but i wouldn’t get anything bigger. Not even a tenth. If i wanted exposure to palladium, I’d get an etf. The problem is you can’t buy physical when the price drops like a stone and you cant sell when the price spikes. I seem to remember when morezone was selling his stack, he had to sell his palladium 1oz for £200 under spot because spot was high at the time.
