Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone can help me out. I'm collecting flatware for a long time. In my humble opinion, i think i have enough knowledge to find my way around in this space.

A long time ago i bought some flatware. I always seperate the Silver from the non-silver items and the items that need some more research. So, i was looking in my bag of the second group and find these spoons. In the past i tried to do some research, but never found anything about it. It is marked with J.J. Douglas A.i. I don't know if it is silver. It don't have any silvermarks but the age of the spoons can explain that. In the early days not every item was stamped with Silver hallmarks.

I found something about the Douglas Dynasty. A family with a lot of Silver- and goldsmits.

So, i have some questions.

- Is it silver?
- Who is JJ Douglas?
- Is it rare?
- Every information is welcome.

Hi, @DutchSilverFinder.

Unfortunately your (probably) spoon it is not silver. The indicative A1 is for quality silver plated items, following the british marking regulations.

A1 (or AI)= Superior Quality = 32 grams on 12 pieces = 2 2/3 grams per table spoon or table fork. So, your spoon has initially a coat of silver plating over base metal equivalent of 2.66g pure silver.

I can not find now any informations about JJ Douglas.

These silver plated items are not rare, are not in demand now, can be easily find at £1-£2/each.

I would be really interested to see pictures with your solid dutch silver finds.🤗

Thank you! Fast feedback. I like that.

Bought it for €2,- per piece. It was a nice gamble. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

Together with the Douglas items, i was able to buy a few other pieces. Old flatware from The Hague (NL). Marked with the stork (with eel) and the Crowned Lion (0.934 silver). So, in total it wasn't a bad deal at all ;)

Hello all,

Since I received good help last time, I have a question again. Does anyone recognize this sign? I can't make out anything from it. I suspect it is a Dutch sign.

The fork seems silver. What do you think?

Hi, this mark was used by Edouard Deetjen (Strasbourg, France) from 1845 to present, with few variations. This company produced mainly silver plate flatware. Your fork is as well silver plated.

Cheers!

Stefan.

It is Silver. That's for sure. But is is so beautifully created.. it would almost be a shame to melt it down.

I think it is Hanau Silver.😊

These marks are atypical. See:
