Interesting Sovereign - 1871 - Die 30

This is (for me at least) a slightly interesting Sovereign.

This is the second 1871 Die 30 that I have seen that has the same odd marks beside the crown on the reverse, and what I think is an outline of her head.

Looking closer, I think at the bottom of the reverse there is the outline of Victoria's head.  There are also some odd details to the right of the shield before the leaves.....I wonder if this is part of Victorias hair bunch.

My guess is possibly die clash, but I might just be seeing things.

As always - opinions welcome!

You're not seeing things, I can see at least one die clash on the reverse.

There are 2 die clashes here showing the outline of Victoria's neck line, one slightly offset from the other.

Yes, I can see that and again I agree.

You didn't mention the beading on the left of the reverse, just above the inscription of BRITANNIARUM. It looks like there is a double strike of beads. Could be a shadow but it could also be the result of a die clash. If the inside set of beads are flat then I'd put money on another die clash mark.

Before I even looked at the photos, I could have answered your question - yes, that is clear die clash evidence.

I have also noticed that when high grade 1871 shields turn up, they are often die numbers 28 through to 32.

How about die No 2 then?!

Trip down memory lane. This was my very 1st Shield sovereign bought many, many years ago from the Dorset Coin Company for £72. Advertised as EF then - seems about right I think.

That's a nice coin, and good info.
