Why do we get sharp price spikes?

Hello gold boffins!

I often see crazy spot price spikes that are short lived as per the picture below. Can anyone explain why this happens? Trading shenanigans?

Possibly one tiny trade, the conspiracy theorist might suspect an attempt at market manipulation.
