Rainbow toning question

Byronvan

Recommended Posts

Hey guys.

I've noticed a few sellers have very new coins some even 2021 coins that have a rainbow toning.  Anyone have any idea how to get a coin to do this kind of toning? They've obviously used some kind of chemical or something to speed up the process.

If like to try something like this on a few random coins I have to see if I can get it to work.

Thanks in advance

Byron

To get the colours you can go down the electrochemical route, best to look up Anodizing silver Coins.

A lot of the rainbow colours you see on coins is through this method, and I think there are a few , slabbed by the "experts" at NGC and PCGS, that where done this way.

Personally I really dislike the doctoring of coins in this manner.

Morgans and many other coins are naturally toned because of environmental factors such as burlap sack storage.

There are many coins toned / doctored using artificial means.

My feeling is that monkeying around with trying to change the value and artificially toning coins is deceitful to those buying the coins in years to come.

Absolutely agree with you, the amount of numismatic coins that have been messed with ,and where people will lose money if and when they sell them, hurts all collectors.

Yeah for sure.  I'm not looking to add value to the coins.  I just like the look of it and would not mind experimenting on one or two odd coins i hand lying around.
