Just curious, if I was to buy a silver bar, say from eBay or wherever, and it came in it’s original protective wrapper then what other test apart from magnetism could I do? The plastic would ruin specific gravity and I can’t touch it with anything.

I watched a program on TV last week Fake Britain or similar.they went into Assay office in London to test jewellery, exactly what it is made off.Machine seemed to be using lazers,i think, to test.looked to be size and shape of a microwave oven.owners brought their jewelry in to be tested, with some very big suprises.big makers not accurately describing what items were made off.some would be confiscated by trading standards and some was actualy dangerous possibly fatal due to contents.

anyone know what this machine would be called and price and if there are smaller similar machines that test every possibility that are more compact /cheaper.

A Sigma will easily test those bars, even if they are still in mint packaging.  Tested these Johnson Matthey  silver bars a few moments ago.  All were still in their mint sealed plastic.
