closed Relative Newbie Q: Need to purchase some capsules...

Hi all, hope this is the right place for this thread!

Having bought a fair amount of coins last year ( 🙂 ) some of them came "nude" and so need capsules, so they all fit nicely into the trays of the coin case my mum randomly bought me for Xmas this year!.

I need 12 or so for 1oz Roosters and Britts, but I also have a 1/10 Plat and 1/10 gold brit that came to me nude that need protecting.

So, where is the best place to source and are the recommendations as to the best type, and also the type to steer clear of!

I can see auctions on ebay, listings on Amazon etc, but I don't want to buy any old capsule that will essentially be no better than if I keep them in the small zip locks that I popped them into already.

That and how do you "size" your coin so you know what capsule to buy for it, is there a handy-dandy chart anywhere that a newbie can look at?

Thank you!

Never ask a Gentleman to 'size' anything, it often ends in disappointment.

1/10 coins are 16.5mm and if they come nude will certainly need protecting. I recommend pvc free sheaths.

Safety first.

You could encapsulate but then you wouldn't get to feel them. Some collectors like to fondle. Feels good in the hand.

Technically, alcohol is a solution..

Drop @morezone a line - he sells Airtites which in my opinion are the best capsules there are.

Cheap capsules may actually damage your coins.

Are these any good? (In terms of brand I mean)
https://smile.amazon.co.uk/Lighthouse-Coin-Capsules-16-5mm-Coins/dp/B002W5XVLG/ref=smi_www_rco2_go_smi_g8682124849?_encoding=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0&ie=UTF8

The small ones are already slightly protected, one in a sheath, one in the RM blister - but they don't fit in my coin case like that! 🙂

I have used coingallery many times in the past, they have a great feedback on ebay but little cheaper dealing direct

Also, a little tip f you are buying brand new coins, most of the Perth mint issue coins (kooks, koala, lunars etc) come delivered in capsules already

This is a webpage in the USA for air tite brand capsules.  They have a handy list of coin sizes and it details which of their capsules will fit.  Either direct fit or with rings to hold your coin.  These are my personal favourite capsules but are a bit more expensive after import duty and post office handling charges than the ones available in Europe.  Morezone is very reasonable on price and may have some of the Air tites you need.

The lighthouse caps I have tried I don't rate.  Maybe I got a bad batch but they seem to come apart too easily for my taste.  I suppose that's fine if you want to open them up all the time but that's not what I want from a capsule.  Airtites will leave you with an object that is like a smooth poker chip to the feel and will require a fair bit of effort to get your fingernail into the fine crack to open them up.  No unwanted accidents when handling.

New profile pic to support the current thing, because it's current year.

Thank you! Alun's sending me some of his rimless capsules. 🙂 but hey, If I find any not fitting I can reach out.

Nothing older than 2013, the Roosters are the RM year of coins, from 2017
