Pieces of Eight (8 Reales coins)

Hi

I've bough from ceepher previously on E-bay and he's done a reasonable reduction on the buy it now price.  awerty has some nice pieces coming up now and again, I think a couple have just sold.  Watch out for the fakes though, there are a few that seem to pop-up repeatedly from another seller/s with the give-away in the small print or if you can see the edge of the coin.

Good luck and hopefully we won't end up bidding against each other 🍺

Thanks for the replies guys!

Love the history of these coins and you've provided me with some good dealers there.

I don't normally go for numismatic coins but these are amazing. This could be the start of something beautiful...yet expensive hahaha

You can normally find spanish reales in online coin auctions, they pop up frequently, but get yourself acquainted with a little light reading first before jumping straight in

Thanks for the advice. I appreciate the time you've taken to reply!

I do love these coins, my head is telling me to concentrate on foundation coins to stack. But if I see something for a good price and in good condition I could crumble.

These are great coins although I usually collect the smaller silver reales with the 1 real being close to the sixpence! I expect I will probably get more 8 reales to complete typesets, I have always resisted due to the amount of fakes. I was considering sending the 1793 shown to NGC as there are none of this date graded but it appears to have been wiped on part of the reverse so would probably get a details grade, having said that it is the best I have seen for this date!

Wicked. @shortstack68 - any advice on websites or books to learn about historic coins. Clearly there is a lot to learn and know.

i see https://sixbid.com presents the lots from quite a number of auction sites.

i see there are coins on ebay but i am constantly suspicious about these. i have seen Numistacker send coins off to be graded and they come back exposed as fakes - they look genuine but presumably weren't.

Are the auctions the most cost effective place to buy?
Where would you find market prices from?

It would be easy to get carried away in an auction and way over pay.
i know what prices are for non numismatic coins - it is easy for me to find out what a ballpark price is but this is another field completely. i am moving from 'expert' to little more than 'complete novice'.

Its always good to sit back and watch a few auctions and get a feel for prices before dipping the toes in, to check some prices i use this site https://www.coinarchives.com For British coins i check various British auction houses such as Londoncoins, DNW and Spink, they are a great resource of realised prices. The 8 reales are a little tricky, lots of fakes, so i'd generally steer clear of eBay unless slabbed and from reputable sellers but you can generally buy from online auction houses.

There's an expression in Numismatics, always buy the book before the coin https://www.amazon.com/Counterfeit-Portrait-Eight-Reales-Real-Reales/dp/0990802906

Mexico mint is the most common mint (M with a small o on top of the M denotes the mint)

This sixbid auction i linked on the 30th Dec has quite a few 8 reales for sale

I have bought a couple from them . 1653 for $500 and 1715 for $300  and a book they have produced.  They really are the experts!  Can put up pics tomorrow if you are interested ?
