  1. Sadly, I think this is true- but I think the intricate design hasn’t done them any favours in terms of the frosting problems. For my circumstance, it’ll be worth a further wait for a replacement, it’s an incredible Reverse design and a fantastic addition for any Sovereign collector. I also think the high quality of the Platinum Jubilee issue raised expectations that the QC for this issue would be a high standard too.
  2. Disappointing. My assessment of the 5 Coin Memorial Set I received today: All the coins have the obligatory sneeze marks/ Welsh dust and some of those hairy strands all of which, I can live with. The 5 Sovereign has a couple of hairlines on the Obverse- ‘now you see it, now you don’t’ type, and two odd looking circular marks what I suspect are shallow, but noticeable scratches, one on the Obverse in the field at the foot of the X of Rex and on the Reverse in the field at around 1 O’clock. The 2 Sovereign looks ok. The Sovereign is ok’ish- has a couple of shiny specks in the frosting and a couple of pinprick missing bits of frosting. The Half is similar to the Sovereign and frankly, I haven’t bothered inspecting the 1/4- after all, they aren’t a Sovereign to my mind. It’s definitely a very special Sovereign Set, the Reverse design is fantastic and a distinguished Portrait of the King. If the 5 Sovereign was perfect- I would keep this set, despite the shortcomings of the lower denominations- but there’s 5,595 reasons to send the set back for exchange.
  3. Some very nice coins at York Coin Fair today, and I came home with…… two books 🙄
  4. Thanks @LiquidMetalsUK for the JM Bars 👍 And received this lovely Queen’s Platinum Jubilee 1/4oz today.
  5. Two Charles I (1625- 1649) coins. Both with nice full flan. The first a lovely example, Scottish Silver Twelve Shillings. Third coinage (1637-42), type III Falconer's first issue, F above crown on reverse, 5.78g, (S.5560). The second a nice York, Provincial Civil War issue Shilling, (1643- 44). 5.93g; mm. Lion. Obv. Bust in scalloped lace collar; Rev. with crowned oval shield, ‘EBOR’ below. S.2874, Brooker: 1094; North: 2319.
  6. Fantastic coins, good luck with the quest, it’ll be a wonderful collection 👍
  7. I’m from the past- and remember the days for a collector of anything, and before the advent of the internet anything anyone collected was ‘rare’, desirable and collectible- you had to physically travel to auctions, dealers or rely on mail order or fairs. Now your pride and joy that you regard highly is surpassed ten- fold at the click of a button!
  8. I guess the same with coins, mediocre coins sell at poor prices allied to the intrinsic value, but nice coins will always sell. I think Stamp collecting is still alive and kicking judging by the prices decent collections realise
  9. Lovely high grade Gold, Silver & Bronze South Africa Sets, which include several NGC top population coins. Well worth the wait given Customs delays and hold ups UK side due to postal strikes. All from the late October Swiss Sincona auction. Lovely Gold Proof Gillick & George VI portraits.
  10. Thanks @SilverMike for these lovely coins- a nice Lundy Islands Set, a fantastic high grade 1902 Proof Sixpence a fantastic upgrade in my Sixpence Type Set and the appreciated gift of the 1911 Shilling, with nice provenance, thank you 😃
  11. Tudor, Stuart & Commonwealth Hammered & Early Milled Groats, Sixpences, Shillings & a Half Crown.
  12. Lovely collection Chris. Keep up the good work. Fantastic Caballito 👍
  13. In a break from coin books, Sovereigns, Hammered & Early Milled, thanks @StackSellRepeat for this rare Johnson Matthey London Gold bar 👍
  14. It’s a great reference, identifying and describing most issues of Hammered and early Milled coinage- the plates are a bit grainy though.
  15. I feel fortunate that this reference book got delivered today 👍
  16. As always, impeccable service from @1stsovereign. I received this 2015 Sovereign from Adrian- it’s lovely. It’s a bit of an oddity a BU Sovereign having a discernible cameo on the Reverse and an unfrosted Obverse. If you take a look at the 2014 NGC Sovereign census there’s a Proof designation for an ‘Unfrosted Obverse Die’ with a tiny population- hopefully NGC will recognise this 2015 similarly- and it be a one-off. The Reverse frosting is pleasing and the Sovereign clean and tidy with no issues excepting the obligatory dust. The Obverse is nice and hazy- indicative of being untouched and stored- just how I like to receive my coins.
  17. Anyone interested in Civil War coinage issues, I can recommend this book 👍
  18. I admire your tenacity 👍 True collectors are few and far between 😌
  19. Anyone brave enough/ persevering with this series? https://www.royalmint.com/shop/limited-editions/music-legends/the-rolling-stones/
  20. Lovely 1911 Florins Matt, here’s mine, although I have graded the Gold from the set, I agree with @Simmoleon it’s always a pity to split sets and grade, the Silver just looks far too nice in my cabinet to grade.
  21. Jody Clark designed the reverse of this 2018 £5 Crown depicting St George slaying the dragon. Minted to commemorate Prince George’s 5th Birthday.
