Up for sale is this handsome Charles I Thirty Shillings which would make a nice accompaniment to the latest British Monarchs series. Great detail, nice blue toning and a full flan, with a good weight of 14.75g, it’s diameter 36mm £450 inclusive of SD Postage Third Coinage which dates the coin between 1637- 1642 The Engraver is Falconer, his second issue. Edinburgh Mint. Description: Charles I (1625- 1649) Thirty Shillings, Obverse: Sword wielding King Charles I on horseback. 'F' below the horse's hoof, rough ground below. Mint Mark, Thistle at the start of the legend. Reverse: Crowned royal arms. Thistle at the start of the legend. As the country prepares to celebrate the Coronation of Charles III, I’m offering for sale a nice collection of Shillings issued during the reign of the first crowned King Charles. Charles I ruled in one of the most tumultuous periods of British history, his Reign blighted by feud and unrest leading to Civil War, the Royalists battling Cromwell’s New Model Army, which led to Royalist defeat and Charles I eventual execution, this Regicide signifying the commencement of Britain becoming a Republic, headed by Oliver Cromwell. SOIT. QUI. MAL . Y. PENSE. Edge: Inscribed in raised letters, DECUS ET TUTAMEN* ANNO REGNI LX*, weight 28.22g. (Spink.3787). The Latin legend translates as on the obverse "George the Third, by the grace of God, King of the Britons, Defender of the Faith" and the French on the reverse, "Evil to him who evil thinks," additionally on the edge "An ornament and a safeguard, in the 60th year of the reign".
