Have any of you wondered about this?

Recommended Posts

Have any of you wondered about the coins minted today and how they might be seen and graded in the future?

I’m speaking about general circulation coins. 50 - 100 years from now, general circulation coins minted will be in much better condition by being less handled.

With contactless now (I presume) being the most preferred method of payment and circulation coins still being minted, surely that means less wear.

I may not be posting this in the right section of the forum but surely there will be more higher graded circulated coins in the future approx (2019 -2024) as I write this.

Agree and i think so too...i also think all coin issues will be mainly for commemorative purpose in future, coz as u said, contactless payment is major and preferred payment mean nowadays.  Maybe RM also forsee this and close down their overseas mint departure.

They closed the overseas department because it was losing loads of money and they hadn’t made much from it for a while🤔😮

Conversely there will be a lot more coins in good condition available for collectors. Will anything be considered rare or desirable ?

I collect BU 'circulation' 50p coins (and year sets) from various of the non-Royal Mint sellers now available*. None of the coins will ever command much of a premium - these companies have pretty much wiped out any future numismatic market for modern coinage :(

I can only hope that plebs inheriting encapsulated coins break them out to spend them - less likely now with everyone using plastic 😁

*Too much disposable income !

Yes I've thought about this for years. The truth is, ever since the mint started manufacturing annual BU sets there is 'generally' little to no point in collecting anything from change. There will always be mint examples available in quantity, not much will become rare. The rarities will be the oddball items like specific die pairings, errors (dateless 20p I'm looking at you) and very, very low mintage material in BU set form.
