Is this sovereign worth buying, with green oxidised copper on?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm looking to buy this 1885 Melbourne sovereign, but there is oxidised copper on which I'm guessing is from when it was previously mounted. Is it worth buying and can it be cleaned?

Image one the tarnish is at 2 o'clock and on the horses tail.

It all depends what you are paying for it. If it has been mounted, then worth no more than spot and maybe even a little less.  If you are holding for a long time, it would make no difference now. if you are trying to do a quick flip, then it will.

Thanks for your response. I've been offered it for £410. The plan is to hold on for a while, but I think I'll keeping looking for cleaner sovereign.

You will get a much better coin than that on this forum. Under no circumstance buy that coin for that amount. I can sell you a much better 1870 with 8 over 7 date that makes it classed as scarce for about the same price, maybe £5 more.

This is a fair price for a Vic sovereign and the copper oxide isn't a problem as a dip in acid should clear that.
Having been mounted does drop its value if there is obvious damage to the coin but this one doesn't look so bad.
This is a bullion price taking no account of age or condition and isn't worth much more than spot, so buy it if you want an older coin in your collection.
If you prefer a new coin in pristine condition then see if you can match this price.
If this is a private sale then maybe try to negotiate a little and don't forget the cost of insured postage.

I see no obvious sign this has been mounted - does it have solder on the rim that is not shown or did you remove it from a mount?  If there is no solder and it was a clasp mount it should not make any difference.

Its a common date but £410 is currently only £12 over spot, a reasonable price but not a bargain.  @CallumHSLimited has a post up for young heads for the same price and the 1885M on the bottom row of his post looks better, I also liked the look of his 1886M & 1887M

Saw this appear on TV today and I think it was priced at £390 with free delivery, limited to 1 per address.

Their web site doesn't even acknowledge the ref number.
