Nice coin.

Im looking to purchase one as a gift for someone one. The thing i cant get my head round is how they haven't been documented very well.

Do you know how the ones with grades managed to get a grade and not just get a recovery coin slab?

The coins with 1 of 1000 or different number are confusing me to what that refers to.

AFAIK, the early submission were in batches or group of coins and were only authenticated (hence 1 of xxx). Later submissions were graded and no longer had the 1 of xx number batch).

The more popular of these WTC recovery coins would be the American Eagles (Au, Pt & Ag) with 2001 year and MS69 grade.

Im guessing only coins of MS69 or higher got a grade and the rest got a normal recovery coin slab.

You’re probably right. Specially with bulk substitutions, dealers can save money by skipping the grade and just having the coins authenticated.

Articles about the coins make it sound like they was all submitted by the same people/ company, so it is a little strange how theres been no public record of how many coins they slabbed.

Maybe it was the company that owned or operated the bullion vault in the twin towers basement.

Sorry if I’m a bit thick but have these coins been recovered from the ground zero or was it the materials recovered and made into these ?

World Trade Center Coins

COMEX, the futures exchange, had a major proportion of its stockpile of silver and other

metals in the vaults underneath the World Trade Center. In addition, the Bank of Nova Scotia

held millions in platinum, gold and silver bullion in building #4 of the World Trade Center.

These coins where moved from the vault under World Trade Center #4 from

mid October 2001 to the 1st of November 2001.

Comex’s reserves were returned to them while some of the coins belonging to The Bank of Nova Scotia were sent via Brinks armored vehicles to the parent company of the renowned Professional Coin Grading

Service (PCGS), Collectors Universe. PCGS graded the coins and made them available as singles or in sets.

The value of these coins islargely driven by availability.

Some are scarcer than others and some are in more demand than others. The American Eagle coins

minted in 2001 are the most desirable

For some other stange reason some one had millions of Jamaican half pennys stored in a vault as well, that have been sent to PCGS and put on the market as WTC recovery coins.

Just a couple of notes.

- They do go for a considerable premium (Silver more than gold)

- I have seen one example for sale on eBay that I believe was a counterfeit - so just be careful

the 2001 MS69 WTC coin have a big premium and the 2001 MS70 WTC coins are completely in a different ball park.

I have spotted some that have looked questionable, perfect thing to fake. Your not going to break the coin out of the slab and test it that way.

Thanks for the explanations.

I did see a video many years ago of a guy who had a safe deposit boxed at the site. He went to collect his belonging from what was recovered and not much remained of his items once opened up.

They was 2500 safety deposit boxers in a chase bank vault at the 5 world trade center building. Apparently the vault sustained severe damage from fire that burned for weeks. Most of the boxers had nothing but ash in them, when they was finally found.
