An unexpected find...

Recommended Posts

Today I was asked to take a look at someone's 'old coins', they'd been sitting in a box on a window ledge for goodness knows how long and they didn't know what they were or if they were worth anything. There was a small assortment of various coins but to my surprise amongst them were these 4 sovereigns. 2 half and 2 full Edward VII sovereigns, I asked for a magnifying glass and could see that one of the full sovereigns was from the Melbourne MInt. I couldn't believe it, I immediately explained what they were and roughtly how much I thought they are worth, by my uneducated esitmation (granted that this if the first time in my life that I've ever seen any of these coins or even touched sovereigns, 2 months ago I didn't even know what a sovereign was) I looked it up and said that they were worth at least £1130.

They then went and fetched out an old hessian cloth bag with about 50 more coins in and asked me to check them out too. It was an astounding collection of George II farthings, Victorian crowns shllings and farthings, Napoleon III centimes, British-Indian Edward VII rupees and annas, and Hussien Kamel piastres. I went through each one, identified and valued them as best as I could, but then I came across this... now please correct me if I am wrong.

I think this is a 1790 George III half-guinea.

But the last one totally foxed me at it wasn't in my guidebook. There was absolutely no way that I could value it because I had no reference, so I'd be really interested if there are any true numismatists out there who could put a price on this...

1788 George III 1 farthing Worcester token. Answers on a postcard please, because I would love to let them know what this is worth (if anything at all).

I have absolutely no idea, we weighed it and it came in at 4 grams. Doing a standard drop test it made a gold-like ringing sound, not a dull thud. I've emailed my friendly local coin dealer, if it is an imitation he should know.

The 1790 looks to be an imitation
