For buying it's hard to put everything in one comment but the main thread to follow is this one:

If you are buying gold or making purchases that will make a material difference to you, say anything > £200, you should be selective about who you buy from. As a general rule if you go here and look at the top 15 sellers, all of them are solid, many of them are professional bullion dealers with their own businesses (you can see who is a business or private seller from their profile):

I started off cautiously and only bought from members with lots of perfect feedback. Once you hang out on TSF for a while, interact with people and see how folks conduct themselves in the buy/sell, then you can expand your horizons. You will find small private sellers with excellent deals on silver/gold and these are the best people to buy from, many of them, somewhat ironically, hang out in the Naughty Boy Step

Any members who have thousands of posts and have been here for a couple of years are safe to buy from. Truthfully everybody is safe to buy from with the exception of maybe 5 people (all of whom have been banned) over the past several years. You can see this from the feedback trading stats as Stefffana posted, only 31 negative from 48,000 trades (<0.01%)

Make sure to pay by bank transfer and not PayPal or crypto unless you trust the person you are dealing with

It might also be prudent to only buy from people who both BUY and SELL (except for businesses who may exclusively be sellers). Again if something goes wrong somebody on the forum will have the seller's name and address plus bank details
