closed Shipwreck cob

Recommended Posts

Hi guys.

Wasn't planning on selling this, though if it does sell it won't bother me either.

I have for sale a shipwreck cob unknown date or shipwreck it came from. I want to say it may be around 1500 - 1600's year and is Spanish. The mount is soldered on to the top which is a negative but didn't matter when I was wearing it. It has a leather imitation necklace which is 28". Given it's weight I believe it to be a 4 reale.

Thanks for looking.

Hi - do you have any provenance that it is from a shipwreck?  Documentation etc?

It would appear to purporting to be a Mexican 4 real Escudo.

I am not sure this is genuine.  It has what appear to be“pop” marks from casting.  These coins were hammered.  The colour and tone / surface look a little off.

I collect Shipwreck treasure coins (Particularly cobs from the Treasure coast).  I have not seen a genuine cob with casting type pop marks before, nor have any in my collection.

May be a good idea to get an opinion from someone like Daniel Sedwick who is an authority.  He also wrote “The Practical Book of Cobs ” which I would highly recommend to anyone buying cobs.
