Newb Question

Hi,

I decided to invest in silver and bought minted silver 1oz bars. I received them today and was surprised that they came without being covered in plastic. I guess that means they are pre-owned - something I should have checked before buying.

My main concern, however, is that when I weigh them, they are not 31.1g but vary in weight from 31.35g to 31.39g.

Should I be concerned?

In regards to your question, (and I'm no expert) I should think a variation of 0.04g wold be within acceptable tolerance. especially if they are cast bars and not minted. I would check that they are the correct dimensions as well.

Usually if the metals you buys are not in protective packaging/capsules I would assume they are second hand.

Some minted/cast bars do have protection/cases or wraping. some do not. Welcome to the forum paulc

It would be helpful to state what you have bought  where from and if you're comfortable, then what you have paid.

Marginally overweight is OK, underweight is never OK, have you tested them? They absolutely should not be magnetic - this is not a definitive test, but a good start.

As a rule small silver bars carry a significant premium, and are therefore a poor 'investment' choice.

If you introduce yourself on this forum and explain what your aims are, budget, timescale etc then you will get an abundance of excellent advice.

Did they come in a tube or anything like that or were they just loose?

Tell us where you bought these bars. What you paid and what sort of bar they are. Show us photos.

I have lots of 1 oz silver bars that aren't in a capsule. I'd say the majority don't have a capsule. Some of them are in a plastic shrink wrap.

I have never bothered to weigh my 1 oz bars so i don't know what the variation in weight is. I know i have seen LOTS of 1 oz bars that are fake. I have some in a drawer myself. This is in the back of the minds of all those who have replied. This is your 'main concern' - are the bars genuine silver or worthless plated bars. The variation in the weight makes me concerned. So give us more information and photos. 

NEVER buy silver bars like this on ebay. You can get '1 oz silver bars' from places like Alibaba - they are fake and cost a dollar or two - then sellers put them on ebay for the full silver price. Even when you report this ebay does nothing about it. 

Where you buy the bars is very important. You are pretty safe buying from The Silver Forum especially if you buy from a well respected member. The alternative is to buy from a proper dealer. i don't know dealers in France. https://goldsilver.be/en/112-bars sells a few bars and generally have good prices.

Also don't worry that you never introduced yourself - i never did that, i can't be bothered with that sort of thing. You're here now and that is what matters.

It is nothing wrong with your bars being not in blisters/capsules. A lot of them are selling in tubes, so less than a tube will be delivered as they are, individually.

About being overweighted, nothing to be worried about. All the 1oz silver bullion coins&bars are @31.2g-31.4g. 

If you have bought them from a coins shop or serious dealer, you are safe.

About silver as an investment, would be more cost effective to buy bigger pieces (10oz to 1 kilo), at a better price per ounce.

Welcome. I reiterate what most have said. I have lots of bars that don’t have capsules. It really depends what you bought and from whom. The weights you state are well with the margin of error for scales esp as they are all high. If you bought from a reputable place it’s most likely your scales.
