closed 2021 2oz Royal Mint Silver Proof Gothic Crown PF70. Black Mark On Edge £200 Posted

Recommended Posts

Hi there

i have recently come across a Gothic Crown I put away some time ago. I’ve been having a spring clean, moving on those pieces I don’t collect, so I can focus just on my favoured collections.

FYI, It was graded as PF70 with a black mark on the edge (at the time of grading). Ive attached NGC images from when it was graded, which are the first two below. The mark is at 2 o clock when looking at the reverse, 10 o clock on the obverse.

Other than that mark on the edge the piece is top condition.

I’ve also added images of mark in close up for full disclosure and although I don’t think it needs saying ….. it is sold as seen.

i note the cheapest PF70 gothic crown on eBay is £400. I’m offering it at £200 posted. It comes with its box & coa.

cheers

I’ve heard of these black spots/marks on other silver coins. I don’t believe it’s toning. It’s odd that it’s a small restricted space on the coin. Who knows it might conserve? I dare say some more expert silver collectors than me might know.

as you say, it’s a great looking coin. At the price I think it’s a great buy for soneone.

Tbh, I'm actually thinking about it for myself. I just thought this was the coin toning, but I'm obviously not experienced enough and need to ask someone else about it. 😁

The black marks are a consequence of grading. For a period of time a couple of years ago, 2 oz Royal Mint silver coins in particular were coming back from NGC with these marks on them. All concerned parties, NGC and Royal Mint, shrugged their shoulders and washed their hands of it. With help of an intermediary I persuaded NGC to conserve for free one of my coins that had been affected this way. Most of the marks were removed and it magically transformed from a 69 to a 70. 👀
