10k minted is not really rare, some big buyers could have hundreds each which they may dump into the market at one go

There were purchase limits...

Also, why would a 'big buyer' flood the market and destroy the value of their stock?  The best method would be to buy up all the stock, and then starve the market to drive prices up.  No profit-making business will deliberately saturate the market.

As I said, 10k isn't really rare.  As far as holding hundreds and dumping, that can be said for anything really although they'd be daft to dump in one go.  If some thing turns out to be a lemon, yes, completely understandable but if something is a success then it should be trickle fed to maintain the high price for maximum gains. Wouldn't make much business sense to flood the market.  I know there have been some Chinese medals which were low mintage but the supply was even lower as the sponsor held stock back to trickle feed into the supply chain.

But these have mintages in the tens or even hundreds of thousands not exactly rare?

rarity doesn't just = mintage

rarity = demand + mintage

If there's 10,000 of something and 100,000 people want it, then it's a low mintage compared to demand

Don't forget this is a single anniversary, single design, proof sovereign, the like of which we will never see again.

Any serious sovereign collector will want one and there are a lot of sovereign collectors in the world.

10k coins is not that many to satisfy the demand. It was always going to be a success.

Compare with the 1989, which continues to rise in value. OK there was no bullion sovereign in 1989 but the bullion for 2017 is a boring G&D design with a pathetic little privy mark, almost a last minute attempt to make it special. No serious sovereign collector will want one.

The availabily, demand and price is sure to ebb and flow but long term, it will hold it's value.

I picked up a 2017 proof half sovereign from chards on Sunday night for £235, checked the next morning to see if they had any more in stock and I noticed they put there price right up to £275! £40 difference over night isn't that bad lol although I won't be selling
