Now as you know I have interests in lots of PM areas, from coins to flatware. I also quite like pocket watch paraphernalia. I have a number of sovereign cases and I do check out eBay for them every now and again to see if I can snag a bargain or two.

The other day I discovered a French hallmarked case and I thought, well that's unusual. Then it got me thinking what other nations made such cases for their gold coins?

I noted some Russian ones kind of like the change dispensers taxi drivers use, and weirdly some USA cases for dimes and half dimes (i.e. nickels) although not for gold coins.

Any thoughts?

I have a thing for antique cases too. I’d love to see your pics.

I believe I’m from the same collectors’ era as @SidS and these are my sovereign cases/purses.

Best one is bottom left 1895 sterling silver with an 1895 full & 1895 1/2 sovereign!. Perhaps the purses were for the ladies?!

Bottom right shows Full/1/2 holder, but underneath is for silver sixpence & silver 3d….

I love these. The bottom left corner double is a beauty.

@Britannia47 - I love the leather(ette?) purses especially that green one. 😍

@SidS - Those Sovereign scales are gorgeous. I’ve looked at buying one intermittently but have yet to bite the bullet.

I really like sovereign scales, I've just bought another pair, boxless this time.

As requested:

Two singles for sovereigns, and two doubles for sovereign and half sovereign. The brass one is clearly the oldest.

I have the same sovereign scale (not in as good condition as yours). They’re beautiful. I could keep buying them just to look at. Thanks for sharing 👍🏼

This is one of the reasons people think why such a lot of old sovereigns are in such good condition. Instead of banging around in a pocket with all the loose change, sovereigns were kept in nice holders, all neat and tidy, no knocks!😮🫢
