Hi folks.

Just a quick introduction.

I've been reading the forums for a while and have gained a wealth of info, so thanks for that.

I'm just starting to collect silver coins - partly as an investment and partly because I really do love the look of them - one day I want a bin full of them like Scrooge McDuck. I find it much easier to save each month by buying something than seeing a number on a bank statement.

I've had a nice chat today with Livia at silver-to-go and will be placing my first order with them on Saturday next week (payday!) - just a small £200 order of Silver Maples to start with and to try it out.

Therafter I'd like to order on a monthly basis so if there is anyone in the area who fancies sharing the cost of postage, please feel free to let me know.

Bye!

PS Bought my first silver coin today - a 2002 1oz silver proof jubulee 50p coin for £12.99 inc postage. Bit of a fluke, but maybe a good omen.

Welcome to the silver forum :)

Saving in precious metals can be a good savings plan, silver and gold and relatively liquid if desperately needing to sell, can get 99% of spot selling to a dealer. But illiquid enough to make sure you don't accidentally spend your savings :)

Thanks guys - just checking whether my bargain is actually a bargain - not that it really matters at that price, but I fancied buying some more from another seller so probably worth checking.

This is what I bought:

the seller said it was silver but there are other places selling them as CuNi like here: http://www.westminstercollection.com/p-752X/The-2002-Golden-Jubilee-Coin.aspx

...am I right in thinking that 'proof' coins are often silver, but the production coins could then be made from CuNi?

I am not sure what that coin is but maybe other members can help.

A Proof coin is the type of process to produce a better strike, there is a full definition that motorbikz wrote in a pinned topic in the silver forum section I believe. As proof refers to the process and not the material proof coins are not necessarily made from silver or gold.

I am quite sure this coin is the silver version, the CuNi version does not appear to be a proof finish like this (mirrored back and frosted image), however I would only recommend picking these up at spot price or very close to it. Its also worth noting these are not a troy ounce so factor that into what you pay.

(Troy is 31.1 grams)

Best to stick with either hallmarked jewellery or recognized dealer sold bullion until you have a little more experience buying or you may get stung, but with this coin I think your ok.

Hi gspurs

Looks like these are from a Falkland islands series, 1oz 28 grams sterling silver .925, I don't know how collectable they are but £12.99 seems like a decent price.

good to see you here
