I swear they must have put it in the box wet,or just not set etc it's the only way it could have gone like that.

Yeah mine was absolutely honking..I think the postman varnished it on route

I wiped of what i thought was dust etc,and it put scratches all over the box Like i'd used sand paper.

I didn't notice before you mentioned it, but you've got me sniffing coins now.

Yes, there is a distinct smell of varnish from the box, although subtle in my case.
