High Relief Coins

Recommended Posts

Hi. I've been offered a couple of Perth high relief coins but I know nothing about them.

Are they collectible? I'd sell them on because it's only bullion for me now.

Examples added. Sorry, library pics only.

Edit: Mintage 7500 for the Snake, 10000 for the Kook.

I think they are collectable to a degree as they are proof, although I have seen quite a few for sale recently. Long term I don't think they will be popular. Personally, I bought a few to see what they were like but haven't taken to them and I'm selling. I think the 1 oz coins are too small due to the increase in thickness and I don't think the conversion from the standard 1 oz design to a HR really works, it just doesn't look right. I think it needs a complete new engraving with more detail.

In terms of Perth Mint silver high reliefs that are continuing sets there are..

Kangaroo started in 2010
Kookaburra started in 2010
Koala started in 2012
Lunar started in 2012

They feature the same designs as found on the equivalent silver bullion coins, apart from the Kangaroo which is the same design as the gold coins. Because of their thickness which is needed to accommodate the high relief they diameter is smaller than a standard 1oz version.

The 2013 lunar snake as you pictured above had a mintage of 7500 and was sold out. The kookaburras also have a 10k mintage, but I am unsure if they sold out or not. According to the info found here http://www.perthmint.com.au/numismatic-mintages.aspx the koala had a maximum mintage of 10k, but the declared mintage was 9,302 so it is possible the kookaburra might not have reached the 10k limit (though it probably did as the kookaburras are probably more sought after than koalas)

If you decide to collect one of the Perth Mint HR series, but only wish to collect one, then I would advise collecting the kangaroo's, personally I like these the most, and also as you can not get the kangaroos in silver bullion, and the gold ones being expensive they make for a nice affordable series to collect. Older years tend to have a small premium.

Very roughly they cost around £50, with older years going for more.

And I would have to disagree with @sovereignsteve in terms of diameter.

I think the smaller diameter is nicer, but this is obviously personal preference. I prefer 1/2oz silver coins to 2oz for example.

Thanks chaps. Great info. I think I'll leave them because they don't appeal to me and tbh, they're too expensive.

Cheers.

When it comes to Lunar II, is there a different between High relief and proof? or are they one and the same. I have seen it saying High relief on some, and proof high relief on other and just plain proof on some.

Yes, the High Relief Proof. And Proof. Are separate coins.
