Sovereigns: Best Value -v- Low Grade

Recommended Posts

Morning,

I am looking to get some sovereigns and wondered if anyone had bought either of the lower cost ones from HGM and, if so, if you had thoughts on them.

Im looking for long term investment (hence sovereign) and so it’s weight I am after, but at the same time, if my situation changes and I need to sell some, I don’t want there to be issues.

See pics below to help with what I mean! The low grade coins are indicated by plasters and a get well soon teddy bear!!!

Oh! And note the price difference is not insignificant. The best value are c.£292 and the low grade are c.£286, so a difference of c.£150 a tube.

Thanks in advance!

My contact will do them at 2% over spot as and when he has them, and most his come in decent grades, though you may get some of the crappier ones. If you looking for best value - retail wise they are the best priced. I can put you in touch if you like.

Well if you are buying either grade from them it doesn't. OP won't buy from Atkinsons.

I must be being daft this morning, but I don't get the point. You are right re me not buying from Atkinsons, but what do you mean by the first part of the sentence? Sorry, not challenging or being sarcastic or anything - just do not understand!! Hope this is clear!!

Andrew.

@AndrewSL76 Be sure you are a weight only man, if you have a collector bone in your body you will end up disappointed.

I was responding to tallthinkev when he said postage wipes out the saving, but both grades are from HGM so postage is added to either. 👍

Not applicable in you case as you shop personally.

I agree with JB here. If you are just stacking weight, I'd suggest you steer clear of sovereigns. Go for qtr ounce krugs, maples, eagles etc. instead.

I tried to 'stack' sovereigns myself and I found it difficult to do so. You always seem to find an excuse:

'oh, that's too good for the pot'

'but I'm sure that's an overstrike'

'it's a perth jubilee head'*

'low mintage that'

'need it for my xxxx collection'

You'll end up with a load of sovs that you just can't bear to part with. Unless you stack post 2000, that is.

*surprised no-one picked up on this 😊

There is something magical with the earlier ones. Every one is special and every one should be saved.  Monty Python explains it best for me.

Technically, alcohol is a solution..

'It [socialism] poses a growing threat, however unintentional, to the freedom of this country, for there is no freedom where the State totally controls the economy. Personal freedom and economic freedom are indivisible. You can’t have one without the other. You can’t lose one without losing the other.'

"There is no such thing as public money, there is only taxpayers' money"

Let not England forget her precedence of teaching nations how to live.
