    Which gold

Cleaned coins should only be a concern if the coin has a numersmatic value. Usually they'll be light scratches on the surface. Some worse than others. The natural luster will vanish. Polished coins look like my head after I've been swimming. Shiney. No natural luster. I've buried polished coins in the garden to dull them but it never works.
  2. It very true. Its a great way to save for people who can't save money. A lot of people like to collect tat. Well why not tat that has a resale value ?

    Which gold

The cleaned sovereign you bought was quite nice. Even coins in museums have been cleaned at some point. Polished coins look dreadful. Theres a difference. A jeweler will buy ex jewelry coins but will pay below spot so you'd have to be careful what you buy. Everyone is different with different ideas. Can't really say this is the right way or wrong way really . Each to their own I always say. But it's good to hear other opinions.

    Which gold

With respect spending £500 a week on poor quality sovereigns seems a terrible idea especially if that is the whole of your weekly savings budget. Yes gold has gone crazy in the past few months but it doesn't always do that. Poor quality sovereigns will be difficult to shift other than at rock bottom prices from dealers. Who would melt them down ? That comes at a cost. Another problem is fakes. Cheap looking coins can be cheap for a reason. I certainly wouldn't put all your eggs in one basket. Collectors spend years leaning the pitfalls.
  5. Well I'd say a mortgage free home and a work pension would be minimum. A kilo of gold is say £60,000 which would give approximately £3,000 pa in a cash isa. As they say gold pays no interest. But it has advantages. You can hide it from governments, pass on quietly to family, spend it gradually as and when needed. Probably won't give you 100% security as there is always the worry it could be stolen. The problem is its incredibly addictive , and i think quite a few of us have bought more than what we should have and had to resell to pay for emergencies. In my case a new roof .
  6. I've never gave a lot of thought to weight. Just numbers of sovereigns collected. So I'm also in the club 😆 but as I get older I will sell some as needed. Can't work forever and don't want to drop dead the richest man in the graveyard. It's sobering watching a beloved collection dwindling I guess. Eventually I suppose the best strategy is to have few examples of different coins , graded highly to enjoy in later life. With the world in turmoil it could be tempting to stack forever who knows. Gold sovereigns as a pension fund is probably not the greatest idea unless you're well stocked with other investments.
  7. At that price not really. Each to their own. Coins polished to hell look dreadful but this is passable as a bullion coin.

    Queen Vics ear wax

Not the first time I've seen this. Decent looking coin but Victoria has a bad case of ear wax. ??? Puzzling
  9. There could be some gems in there. The 1905 shilling for example is well sought after. If near Uncirculated condition could be worth £1000 plus. Not all coins are equal.
  10. Sounds a collector not a secret gold stacker.. the sixpence list looks interesting. Not sure what happened to the shilling collection , as it appears he stopped after 3 coins. ? Condition is everything with old coins. If they are bright and shiny that's not necessarily a good thing as they might have been harshly cleaned , a no no for collector's generally speaking.
  11. What's interesting is the collection is a bit haphazard for someone who collected over the years. Is this the whole collection? Have you searched your grandfathers house throughly? Many people ( on here ) have plenty of hiding places for rare coins.
  12. Interesting collection. As others say the 1887 lot stands out. ( The only set I've seen is in the Ashmolean museum in Oxford ). When I read the title Granddad's collection I cringed. I half expected a lot of c**p from those "" mints "" that prey on old people with over priced tat. Thankfully this is a big boys collection. Very nice.
  13. Billions of dollars to produce half an oz of gold ?. Well its feasible as they can just print more dollars 😆. What are the going to fight the Russians with ? Bows and arrows?
  14. I'll take the Gillicks if available. I thought they were sold ages ago
  15. They're all made from the same stuff 😆
  16. Bargain. Actually that new assistant might pick uk that 1oz Britannia by mistake and charge you for the sovereign 😆
  17. I might have a flutter later. I'm on the bus at the moment and can’t see photos very well..... are they genuine 😆

    closed Shield Sov

I sold a few a week or so ago cheaply. It suited me at the time but I have nothing for now I'm afraid. Rarely can you pick up a decent shield for less than £450 unfortunately.
  19. And they all spent an hour looking at each one 😆
  20. I'd hate to worry you , but one of those sovereigns look suspect 🤔
