completed 2000 proof quintuple sovereign for spot posted
Charliemouse replied to Thomast's topic in UK (Ungraded)
That's a beauty. Proof quin going for spot. Ouch! Well done whoever snapped it up. -
I think Rwanda's coins are great. Love their Nauticals, Africas and Lunars. Nice collection.

You make it sound like a bad thing. 🤣 Welcome to the club. No turning back now.

These still here? Get'em bought, somebody. This is a good starter set of modern sovereigns from a top seller. Can't go wrong. (Not an actual guarantee. Terms and conditions apply.)

withdrawn REDUCED BY £100: 2017 Piedfort Pistrucci NGC PF70 Ultra Cameo Proof Full Sovereign
Charliemouse replied to katyc's topic in UK (Graded only)
NGC seem to always spell it that way. I have the exact same coin, and have seen many others. Beautiful coin. -
Big fan of auto-ISO. Sensor noise can be fixed in post fairly easily - if it's really bad it will soften the image, but most of the time you wouldn't notice. But the alternative to high ISO is slow shutter speed, and motion blur can't be fixed in post. So, you could set the auto-ISO limit to only go so far, but once you've reached that, it's just going to crank down the shutter speed, and you've lost the photo. You just have to be realistic with what you can do in low light.

I hope yours looks OK. I didn't have much luck with my 1990's ones.

Wow! Now that's a custom capsule. Beautiful. And nice photos again, Maxe!

completed 📸 Canon EOS 800D Digital SLR Camera Bundle (swap for a sovereign) 🪙
Charliemouse replied to Darr3nG's topic in All non PM items for sale (All countries)
👍 Assuming everything is in good working condition, I think this is a great price for this bundle. The lens is a well-regarded kit lens. For coin photography, is has a 1:3 magnification, not true macro but could produce photos far better than any mobile phone. The camera itself is easily capable. If you wanted to get more serious with coin photos, you could buy some extension tubes (~£50) or invest in a macro lens later. -
Flattery will get you.... No it won't.

2024 Six Decades of 007 - 1990s - 1/4oz gold and 2oz silver proofs Unfortunately, the second set of James Bond coins that came this week, the 1990s, were not in acceptable condition, and I will return. 1/4oz Gold Mixture of very visible contact marks, big flaws in the fields, and oily residue. 2oz Silver This is a bit more borderline. It's basically missing frosting that's the problem, but there's a lot of it. If this was the only one to return, I might keep it. Doesn't seem to be anything else wrong with it.

Bit of a James Bond week. Both 1980s and 1990s turned up this week. 2024 Six Decades of 007 - 1980's - Silver 2oz and Gold 1/4oz proofs Octopussy's Acrostar Microjet - actually a real flying jet aircraft. These two coins turned out to be spotless - a little spot of missing frosting here and there, as usual, but no contact marks. Although, as shown in the previous microscope photos, the gold 1/4 has a 'wire edge' or 'wire rim' (terms vary) apparently caused when the gold is forced around the edge during the strike.
-
I went over the faces with the microscope, as I'm used to returning coins from RM. It's actually pretty spotless. Maybe the odd pin hole of frosting here and there. Certainly nothing major. It was only when I took it out of the capsule to photograph that I noticed the rim. I am loathed to keep handling it, as I don't want to break the edge. Weighs 7.816g.

2024 1/4oz Proof Gold - Six decades of 007 - 1980's Thought I'd been lucky to get clean coins at the first time of asking from RM. Might have been even luckier with an error coin. I didn't notice until I took it out of the capsule to photograph. The obverse is fine, but the reverse is more like a pastry cutter...

St George's face. Again, which you prefer is subjective. There is definitely not the same obvious quality drop that there was with the full sovereigns in the other thread. The 1980 again is coarser, but the figure is 'rounder' and more 3 dimensional (curved in relief). The 2021 has obviously been redesigned to be flatter, fewer curves, but with finer grain. -
I got the big guns out to continue the comparison series. Both are PF69, and are the furthest apart (41 years) that I own. The newer coin has a much finer 'frost' effect, but also shows evidence of a shifting die and some missing frosting in the typical places. The 1980 is coarser but without fault.
-
I was surprised the price spread was so high. Yesterday CotR sold three PF69s for around £1200, and yet PF70s are selling for £1800. That's a ridiculous price gap for an almost imperceptible difference. For £600 it is definitely worth cutting them out of the slab and resubmitting. I bet half of them come back 70s.
