Mobius got a reaction from finbar1970 in anybody know anything about Silver hallmarks?
It has to be after 1820/21 (because the leopard has no crown) and before 1837 (when the duty mark changed to Victoria), so it must be 1828 as @sixgun says.

Hi.
Unfortunately these are only pseudo-hallmarks, trying to look in a similar way as genuine silver hallmarks without breaking the law, but enough intricate to foul the buyers.
On your item you have a bull stamped instead of lion, the foul's face is present to say "Hey, it is a joke!" , a knight on a shield instead of a king's portrait, an eagle over a leopard face instead of crowned leopard and a caricature of Britannia mark.
Also, it is written in clear Silver on Copper, not Sterling silver.
Few examples of genuine marks are in this image:

I hope you didn't paid too much for this object.
Have a great day!
Stefan.🤗

Mobius got a reaction from HonestMoneyGoldSilver in Advice and Suggestions for how to stack silver
If you don't care if it's not coins, silver salvers on ebay go under spot occasionally. Only today a 10oz silver salver went for £150 with free postage, and with spot at £18, it's worth £166.
A few months back some lucky soul got a silver salver weighing nearly a kilo for £295!
Other antique silver that normally sells around spot is holloware (bowls, tea pots, etc) and flatware (spoons & forks), the newer stuff will be the cheapest coz people collect the old stuff!
You'll have to invest some time traipsing round ebay but it could well be worth it.

Big thank-you to all who have posted so far. Great advice and suggestions. I got my first .925 at spot yesterday thanks to @stefffana who gave me the heads up.
Please continue to add to this thread with anything relevant. Bigging up TSF.

If you are buying scrap there are certain items to avoid such as candlesticks as they have weighted bottoms and many cutlery knives have weighted handles.

Will tag @stefffana as he's very astute in this arena.

Mobius got a reaction from asemp in Who Can Help Me Decipher What Type of Hallmarks These Are ?
Hi,
The item(s) marked '90' could well be foreign 90% silver. The other items are plated, on the bottom picture you can see 'EP' which stands for Electro Plated.

Well you learn something new everyday, thanks for that info @stefffana, I've only ever dealt in British silver, so my knowledge of foreign silver is pretty slim.
You're definately the man for foreign silver!

The "90" number without "%" mean 90g of pure silver used to silverplate a set of 12 forks and 12 spoons.
On some asian silver objects, it is used the mark 90% for silver .900.

Mobius got a reaction from daca in Hallmark translation help please
Hi,
the 958 is indeed the silver fineness, it's a Britannia Standard silver mark, the next mark is the import mark for London and then the date letter 'A' for 1975.
I can't help with the makers mark unfortunately, it's always hard to get info on modern makers.
Mobius.

I agree with @sixgun, that is the date letter 'D' for 1839 (London). The other marks are the Lion Passant and a Duty Mark.
