VeracityM got a reaction from James32 in Sovereign Problem
Good question - we can ask the seller about that @AdamDutton as I haven't thought to ask that?

Youre correct James, she said they would not trust the gold content (I think that's in the email I posted to the first page of this thread) of the coin and they would refine it. They would have cost in doing that.

This wasn't their 'in writing offer' - this was just the woman tasked with calling me to give the news that they believed the coin to be fake - I have no expertise in how Atkinsons operate.
I probably didn't ask the right questions, as I didn't know wtf to say to them, all I could think of was 'I hope they don't think I'm trying to screw them over with fake coins'.
She didn't seem to have the authority to make me an offer, an I guessed that she was just making a guess herself.
I got the impression that if I had have authorised them to cut it or buy it, then there would have been a considered decision made by someone authorised to make offers and I would have had to wait for another phone call for that.
There were a number of phone call following that initial surprise / shock call.
I have never bought a fake coin before, I have zero experience in doing so.

I just looked at an 1887s I have, once in NGC holder and cracked out, and S appears far from the next much like this BBP coin. Of course NGC can be wrong but this particular coin of mine doesn't look very wrong to me, and I guess the mint mark could appear in a very liberal manner?

You could auction something else like a 1 Oz silver Brit and the winning bidder gets 'free' the suspect sov?

Nice ! I think I know of a newsreader that would love one of these as a brooch.

The mint mark isn't really twisted, it was just the rotation and perspective differences between the two photographs. It's a shame that the 'questionable coin' doesn't have a pic directly from above because they could then be aligned better. However, it does look like it's a smaller 'S' mint mark but that isn't too odd as far as I understand? Atkinson's photo from a narrow angle was the most concerning from my perspective, otherwise I think this would probably have fooled me if I am completely honest. That's why I feel we should try to learn from it if it is a fake, and if not, then it'd be good to know that too. Could it just be a genuine anomaly? I'd love Mr. Chard's opinion on this one!

I had something similar years ago . With hindsight it was terrible fake , i sent it to Chards who confirmed it was a counterfeit , but the gold content was higher than a sovereign and they offered me a good price for it. That is one collection i'd love to see. Chads collection of fakes.

Listen up Linda - I haven't even got one sovereign of each monarch of the last century 🤪

This is the reason everyone should have at least 100 sovereigns of each monarch . So coins can be compared against each other.

There are quite a few subtle differences upon real close inspection, the mint mark for Sydney is twisted and in a different position and the very bottom of the neck line is shaped differently.

If it turns out to be pure Adam, we each auction half 😉

Send it to Chards . If it is a fake keep it for reference . It is good you had suspicions in the first place.

Can we just give a moment to give @AdamDutton a big thumbs up?
Seems like the chap did the right thing. Mistakes happen, it's how you deal with them that counts.

I'd rather someone has a second opinion either way if it happens to be genuine I'm a man of my word

Chards and specifically @LawrenceChard would give s definitive outcome, I mean as to fake sovereign or not. But only foolproof way to check if solid gold is to look inside.

That's what I meant 😆
Also do a specific gravity test before cutting.. @BackyardBullion has a great video on YouTube. Then you will be semi sure of its gold content before the trip to B &Q
