1899 Perth Sovereign. Mint Mark Looks Off 🤔

Recommended Posts

Hi All 👋

Just wanted to make sure with those with far superior knowledge on this than me.

The P mint mark doesn’t look right but perhaps that’s just my untrained eye. all other tests on this coin come up trumps 👍. Have I missed anything else?

Still trying to get my head around taking good quality photos. I struggle with the light all the time. Hopefully it’s clear enough 🙏

Opinions please?

It does look a bit far south 🤔 image below for comparison

But aside from being ex-mount and highly polished, it otherwise looks alright to me.

That was my concern. The P looked too low 🤔

Shown as rare in Marsh - first year minting sovereigns 1899.

Certainly scarce and difficult to find in good condition….

I was just wondering if you thought the P looked lower than it should be?

I don't recall seeing any of my Perth sovs with the mintmark positioned as far down 🤔

Just looked through pics I've got handy on my phone... Found this... It looks a little low at that angle

I think the opinion given earlier by @iacabu is probably correct. The position of the ‘P’ may not be an issue as to Fake or not.

There’s often a shadow along the exergue ground line or even light for that matter, to confuse matters.

But what have you done, but given @modofantasma an excuse to show off his collection of King George V Perth Sovereigns with his superior photos? !! 😁😁

Thanks for the pics. I have a few Perth mint sovereigns and the P definitely looks different and higher. However as @Sovhead has the exact same coin and says it’s exactly the same, it’s made me more comfortable 😅. Great pictures. I’ll have to sort mine out 👍

I’m more of a Melbourne man myself….as I’ve collected I seem to have acquired way more of them than Sydney and not intentionally strange fact.
