1860 Gold Sovereign date Question

Recommended Posts

So I have been going through all my shield back sovereigns, as I’m pondering on the idea of getting some graded. I haven’t gone through them all yet, but noticed something on the 1860 one which is unusual. Never spotted it before, but 0 in the date, looks offline and more like an O. Is this quite a common characteristic of this date? Or is there something else going on? Thank in advance

This is not a Marsh 43B, this is a large 0 variety which is not mentioned in Marsh but is as common as the 'normal' 1860

The 43B is not a large character, but it is an O and not an 0

I was the same when I had my first large 0, I have two now

I have a third as well which I think is the 'normal' variety

I have seen a few of the large 0 sell as Marsh 43B though, so others may have differing opinions.  And to be honest I would prefer to be wrong given I have two of them :)

There are a few different O's or 0's, shapes and sizes. and I honestly don't know which ones match the Marsh entries.

Steve Hill tries to explain the differences in the Bentley Collection Auction catalogue here, but I'm not sure which is which still. Got any O's? 😃
