Prince & Princess of Wales one eighth sovereign with Welsh gold

I'm not a big daytime TV viewer but happened to have it on when this advert came on for a Hattons 1/8th gold sovereign commemorating our Will 'n Kate's becoming the Prince and Princess of Wales with a small trace of Welsh gold in. It appears to be a very limited edition and it's only going for £69 but only one per household.

I don't know if its of any interest but the price goes up to £149 after February. I haven't figuered out how much 1/8th sovereigns go for yet, but this doesn't look like a bad deal and seems like a chance to own a nice collectable coin for not very much. 🤔

Buy it if you like it, but they don't hold their value I'm afraid.

Still, £69 isn't bad for a 1g proof.

Technically, alcohol is a solution..

'It [socialism] poses a growing threat, however unintentional, to the freedom of this country, for there is no freedom where the State totally controls the economy. Personal freedom and economic freedom are indivisible. You can’t have one without the other. You can’t lose one without losing the other.'

I wouldn't touch it. £69 for 1g gold isn't very attractive. Almost anything Hattons of London, London Mint Office, and so on produce aren't worth collecting and is basically scrap gold.

Besides, these are companies with questionable business practice (selling gold coins at stupidly high prices to unsuspecting pensioners who will never get back what they pay), and it's worth practising caution on their integrity as a whole. I wouldn't leave a single piece of personal info on their website let alone purrchasing from them. Expect to be bombarded with commercials by phone, email and post.

@Kitalon  I certainly agree with the comments above. Be careful of coin marketing companies/mints who tend to target the general public, as seen on TV & news-paper adverts. For the time being I suggest you stick with the RM!

Here’s my ‘to avoid’ list:- Bradford Exchange, Harrington & Byrne, Jubilee Mint, Westminster, London Mint Office, Windsor Mint,
CPM( Coin Portfolio Management) and Hattons of London linked to the Commonwealth Mint….

Be suspicious of anything representing various British overseas territories etc such as TDC (Tristan da Cunha), Gibraltar, St Helena, Ascension Island etc, posing as ‘pseudo-sovereigns’ of very small sizes, before you part with your money!

I leave you with a photo of the capital of Tristan da Cunha, an island in the South Atlantic with a population of about 240. Their currency is linked to that of St Helena and Ascension, both of which I’ve visited….

@Britannia47Thank you for sharing your wisdom with me. Until recently I didn't know that these British overseas territories even had mints. It has opened up a real treasure trove of new and interesting 50p's I never knew existed!

Shh don't tell anyone but I even picked up a really nice Gibraltar full proof sovereign. Its my first sovereign and I really like it. 🫢

Well done for buying something you like. My first was also a proof sovereign, but from the RM. many years ago!

Of course, Gibraltar & other overseas territories usually have their currencies minted by U.K. based mints, in your case probably the Tower Mint. It’s fine as a keepsake, but you might want to continue with some older RM bullion sovereigns.  After that see how it goes, depending whether you simply collect, or stack….

Been doing a bit more digging and they're also doing the same kind of deal for King Charles 75th birthday one eighth sovereign.

The KCII 75 b'day 1/8ths are now SOLD OUT so can't buy them for £69 anymore, going for £120-135 on FleaBay. Just sayin'. It'll be interesting to see what this looks like a few years down the line (and if anyone is buying them). 🤔
