Opinions on this 1880 Canadian 25c please?

Recommended Posts

Just picked this up in a job lot of Canadian stuff, doing some date runs.

What would cause the marks on the reverse on the '80' and to the bottom of the coin? Is this testing or has someone tried their hand at soldering or the like?

It's a bit of a shame as the rest of it seems in reasonable shape.

Any opinions would be great, thanks.

As @GoldDiggerDave said, it is a deposit of something. Definitely not soldering attempt or testing.

For a circulated coin it is in a great shape for its 143 years and that black dirt is part of its life, should be there to add a plus of authenticity over the natural patina. Please, compare with these similar coins from Ebay and you will love your coin as it is.🤗

Thanks for the input too @stefffana

I had a quick squint on eBay and there seems to be a decent market in Canada for them (for obvious reasons).

It would be interesting to fire it on eBay and see if I get any nibbles. When I find a nice coin like this though, I struggle to part with it. 😅

In your joblot of canadian coins, do you have some .800 issued until 1967? If yes, I am interested.

Was sorting out my full Canadian collection last night and some more tonight.

I am stacking/collecting .800 silver circulated coins from all around the world.

If you are happy to sell your spare .800, I can pay 4%-5% over spot posted.

If you are interested to sell, I am here.😊
