I don't see anything Dave, well maybe a little wiggle but not a mint mark

So that means London then?

I wasn't sure how obvious the mark would generally be

I’ve tried to put together a photo of the 6 overseas minted sovereigns, but failed miserably. What I needed was your photographic skills and a macro lens! Just to confirm then, that if you see nothing obvious on the ‘ground’ it’s the London Mint.

Basically they are all in the same place you were looking at - S.M.P. I. SA. C. Exceptions are with the Victoria Young heads where the mark is below the shield, or on the G&D actually on the obverse below the head.

Property, Photography, and a Vivid imagination should be very useful on TSF! 😀😀

Maybe I'm seeing something that's not there as well, but is there something under that 8? Look inside the top loop.

I blame @LawrenceChard for this! Too much analysis of sovereigns in detail. He'll have us counting the total number of atoms next.

Now if you just tweaked the lighting slightly to have a liitle more from "below", it would be clearer.

From your macro, it is difficult to be certain, but I think the "S" is imaginary, therefore a London Mint.

Having recently said that your photos are excellent, you go and let me down!

Here is a quick mintmarks guide:

but images are only 400 pixels wide.

About 9.43x10^26 atoms, but we have not actually tried counting them yet, and this is only a first order approximation.

In defence i didn't shoot this with that detail in mind. I'll do another image tomorrow and we'll know for sure

No. I'm thinking that mine was a 1780 changed to an 1880 😂

I think we've all seen the quality of workmanship from the 1850s-60s era RM and how many overdates, over letters, etc. Nothing would surprise me if an employee stamped the wrong number in the wrong place.

If it is, I'll swap you for a guinea.

One did, but he was given his P44

How dare you malign those apprentices with their hammers! How were they to know that 150+ Yrs  in the future, a hyper critical forum would be formed to expose their shoddy work? Hang on, what’s changed!……😁

Now we have the internet instead of print media!
