Government - want CV grant back??

Recommended Posts

My wife is in events and got gifted a £3000 grant over several payments in 2020.
As events were completely banned she made no money in 2020 & as a result had no tax.

Can anyone work this out & point me in the right direction of how to deal with it?
At the end of the day this is algorithm created, so speaking to an actual person would make sense.

I have a huge tax bill this year which is wiping me out so this is not helping.
Worst case scenario we can get a payment plan, but it includes the BOE interest rate.

Was it an SEISS grant?  If so she shouldn't have to pay it back as it was a grant and not a loan, although it is taxable and will have to be declared as income on her tax return. There is a special section in the self assessment declaration for declaring SEISS grants

If on the other hand it was one of those business loans they were handing out all over the place then she will have to pay it back, because they were loans and not grants.

Its apparently because she did not file her 2019-2020 - but she did - so its a case of calling them i think.
But yes you are right if she was operating then she is entitled. It was not our idea to be house arrested!!

If you hadn’t filed a return at that time you wouldn’t have got any money when they were handing it out due to covid effecting businesses. Also, any tax returns are saved after completion and when you log in to the site it will show your return and that you sent it.
