There is a auction going on at eBay, I'm not good on British coinage. Any one here, that can tell how legit this one is? 1787 and UNC, what is the odds :S

Here is the link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/231822925750?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Well considering the seller has a feedback of 364527 and he only sells coins, I'd have thought you'd be pretty well safe.

Yes, I know. I also have bought from him before. And those coins have been legit.

But I also have taken him on 2 different occasion, saying silver on CuNi-coins. So he do mistakes sometimes.

It's a very good price, compared to others out there, if it's real. There are a number of 1787 shillings in less good nick going for a lot more... Either a steal, or too good to be true?

(I'm a stacker rather than a collector, so have no real knowledge.)

It can also been cleaned. There are several NGC graded that looks different to each other. But I guess the minting wasn't so refined back then.

I will let it pass. Not in the mood to gamble tonight.

Thx all :D

It looks very dodgy to me, especially the centralisation of strike and the size of the flan. If has also been cleaned to within an inch of its life.

How a sixpence from that era survives to this day with so little wear is very suspicious

Indeed. All the ridges are intact.

It went for US$ 93. Someone either got a very good price, or paid a lot for a duff coin.

That illustrates why I've stopped buying through eBay. Just established a 'Silvertowne' bar I bought once is fake... Nd magnet just slips off.

Now I only buy from established bullion retailers.

This is true, ebay is a gamble. But most of the coins I like you can't find on retailers. But I have ordered some British coinage literature from Amazon today. Have some reading up to do.

Yeah, but I'm not a collector, and definitely not a specific-coin collector.

I'm all about the metal at the best price I can get - the antithesis of a collector, I guess. So my goal is to avoid unnecessary premiums and definitely avoid fakes.

Hopefully the one ounce of fake silver I bought is the last.

Good luck in the future!

These are very common coins though and are often found in very good condition.  I think I've read they were worth more for bullion at the time so lots didn't circulate.  I do have one or two in good condition but not with both no serif 7s and only 5 semes/hearts - that is a scratch on one of the hearts?

They may have not been intended for general circulation either.

The black flecks are also found on silver of the correct age supposedly due to the alloy quality.

Interesting stuff.

The bit I don't understand is that all the ones I've seen and also photos have the writing all round the  coin very close to the edge. This one clearly has an off-centre strike but if the planchet is the correct size, on one side the writing will be away from the edge and on the other, it will be off the edge!

This one seems to have been struck on a slightly larger blank. Whether this is possible in those days, I don't know.
