CGS and LCGS. Are they the same?

I have just come across London Coin Grading Service. Is this the same as the CGS that sometimes appears for sale on graded coins on E Bay? Which is better to use?

Yes they are essentially the same, as the London Coin Company took over the CGS when they were in difficulties.

The CGS were a good idea in the days when it was difficult for collectors in the UK to access PCGS and NGC as it involved sending everything to the US. It also seemed a good idea at the time to standardise on a scale up to 100, well more logical anyway! As the Sheldon system of the US companies was extremely well entrenched, the CGS system was always going to be a loser.

Yes, LCGS now own CGS and sell CGS coins that they own and have graded themselves.  Their grading is no longer independant or reliable, and many examples have done rather poorly following cross-grafing from CGS to the American grading companies.

Yeah, I wouldn’t be getting my coins graded by a dealer either 🙄
