I got really pssd off with my Post Office this week, when i was sending off a 1/2 oz gold Brit.

It was sealed, obviously, with address on etc. I said to send it Special Delivery. and the convo went:

'whats inside?'
'it needs insuring for £500 please'
'whats inside?'
'it needs insuring for £500. Can i have the tracking number please?'
' i need to know whats inside'

I was so annoyed. i had a queue of people behind me. in the end i said 'a coin'. didnt want to say 'gold'. Now at least 3 local OAPs getting their pension that morning know i ship at least 1 coin of high value, and therfore may have more. :@

Royal Mail?

Similar experiences for me also. Hate it when they ask what's inside. Depending on my mood I will sometimes say nothing illegal or valuable.

I had this at the PO this weekend gone.  I was sending a set of stamps to a friend - value just below GBP500.

I said I did not want to declare what I was sending, and the PO lady was absolutely insistent that she would not send unless I told her what was inside.

When I told her stamps, I she thought I was taking the mick and asked again!

This was in front of people at the PO - not on in my opinion.

I wonder if they are essentially doing the job of the police and looking for people posting drugs or similar.

They only ask because of EU regulations on what can be sent in transit especially via air and they need to be sure it is not on the banned list

https://www.postoffice.co.uk/mail/uk-what-can-i-send

Which what you read into it is quite extensive.

In the none Orwellian 1984 world, I love just to tell them "its none of your damn business", but this response will only get you "Computer Says No" mode from Mrs nosey behind the PO counter these days

What I have found when sending gold or silver, just say to Mrs Nosey behind the counter

"A boring none descript item of little monetary value, commonly known & easily pictured/identified in their mind - Computer Parts - Memory cards - Tax Documents - Family Photographs "

Make sure what you say is appropriate to the size, dimensions & weight of the parcel.

Use the same stock response/reply in the same post office you use, and they soon stop asking you, when they know me. I have sent so many supposed "Memory Cards" locally, the girl asked me if i could get her a Scandisk 8GB card cheap. Put on the spot, I said sure and just gave a spare I had at home next time I was in 🤣
