Queen's Beasts Discolouration On The Edge

SilverSnake

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Has anyone ever seen a dark discolouration around the edge of a sliver coin? It's almost like a copper colour and the bevelled edge is very rough to the touch whereas the rest is smooth. I have attached some pics which should help. The coin is the Queens's Beasts Griffin 2 oz Sliver.

Thanks,

SS

Haha, don't say that! It certainly doesn't look like a fake but that's what I was worried about.

I am just kidding with you :P, the coins are 999%, that means that the 0.01% thats possibly in there can be a metal which will rust/tarnish, the reason I think that old Sterling silver goes black over time.

it's the silver that tarnishes and eventually goes black, not

the impurities. silver is not corrosion resistant like gold.

Yes, my 20 pound coin from the Royal mint also has this. Not sure what this coin is called, I call it the Silver Sovereign, 1/2 Oz.  More black than brown though..

That’s called the St George and the Dragon £20 Pound

one of my favourite coins. Shame they don’t do these in crown size.

Re the toning use baking soda silver foil and hot water method, works well on pure silver.
