What's coming in 2019?

Just thinking out loud here but with the 10 year anniversary coming up for the quarter sovereign, I wonder if the RM will do a special issue for it? Does anyone think the 2018 piedfort sovereign will sell out? I've also noticed that you can still purchase a Platinum Anniversary SOTD sovereign as well. I can't wait to see what they come up with.

The RM missed a genuine chance to celebrate 200 years of the Half Sovereign last year with the 1817 shield design. I personally doubt they’ll celebrate 10 years of the Quarter Sovereign.

I did see from the Gazette that they’ll be commemorating Queen Victoria in several ways; her birth (being 1819) and something about the “workshop of the world”.

IMO the quarter sovereign is pretty much irrelevant, but knowing the RM, who knows what crackpot anniversary they'll come up with next.

I very much doubt the RM will do the Piedforts after this year therefore this makes it worth holding the 2017 and 2018 Piedforts.

They'll become a one off.

Indeed! The RM should just lie low until the Queen’s 95th Birthday, or better yet, until the Platinum Anniversary of her Accession/Coronation.

That would be nice if true but then why did they mint a max of 3750 for the 2017 and 2750 for the 2018 unless they are planning like some have speculated that there may be a piedfort set coming down the pike at some point? Certainly more then they need for exchanges and what not.

I’m not sure I understand what the mintage numbers of the 2017 and 2018 might have to do with some future piedfort set. Could you please explain? Sorry if I’m being a noob :)

They always do that; look at mintages of any coin. I assume many must be reserved for various reasons.

For one, I’m sure they hold a couple in the Royal Mint museum - you never know which coin might be valuable in future; I doubt they will literally sell every single coin and keep none in their archives. They’d keep some in their archive for posterity’s sake.

Then there’s giving to Royal family members; or at least the most important ones. I assume these might belong to the Crown (like other jewels that are considered heritage and aren’t owned by the Queen or her descendants). These coins might reside somewhere at Buckingham Palace.

This is all speculation on my part as I’ve always wondered where those extra minted coins go, and it’s fun to think of the possibilities :)

I kind of missed all the fun that was going on in 2017-2018 with all the great coins the mint came out with those years, but I'm happy to report that I did also pick up the George's 5th sovereign. Now I've a list of about 8 more back years to start collecting plus try to keep up with what they're going to put out next year, lol. But boy is it fun.
