Well, I initially soaked it in ammonia to see what happened. It did seem to help with general gunk so I thought I'd try bleach. Works a treat on the sink...

Any chance electrolysis will clean that up?

I'm sure a few of you have tried before but basic instruction/videos quite widely available. Here's one anyway...

Maybe you should patent it and then sell it to the Mints.

At least that way we would not have to worry about toning anymore.

The only thing is there would be more sets to co^**ct. I cannot say the word it is like a very bad swear word :D

As there would be a black version of every coin.

So I tried the aluminium foil and bicarbonate / salt method on this coin. It's gone from a dark grey to a lighter grey but it still does not look even like a piece of metal. Any ideas fluttershy?

I can`t think of anything that would take it back to it`s original condition to be honest, the chlorine has dislocated the silver structure making the surface porous/spongey, and as you say very non metalic looking.

other than flashing the metal at high temp very quickly to surface melt the coin a little (very tricky!) you`ll just have to polish it back down to the metal again and hope the damage didn`t go too deep.

some Silvo and a plastc scour pad would do the job, but you`ll never get it back to original condition again, sorry :(
