  1. Most likely a silver plate item with the maker's initials and a cartouche. It's possible to track down maker's information with this but often very difficult due to the nature of silver plate marks.

I'd argue that it's a run of the mill 1887 sixpence and it's been cleaned. A coin should have either natural toning or original lustre. It appears the field, legends and designs all have exactly the same tone, and there's wear on the shield on the reverse. When coins are used they will pick up little bits of grime which get into the nooks and crannies (legends etc.). A coin that isn't FDC or crisp mint that has one overall colour is a dead ringer for a cleaned coin. This would give the coin a lifeless, flat look about it, which some unknowing sellers might consider matt (although matt should of course mean flat and not glossy/shiny).

I've seen cleaned coins go extra shiny all over but this does make the most sense with regards the apparent overall consistency. Possibly a chemical of some kind was used in the process.

The listing ended and he hasn't gotten back to me, probably the last we'll hear of it but who knows.

  3. The seller got back to me quickly, he claims it was part of a "high end job lot" from one of the "biggest sellers" on eBay. It was labelled as matt on the coin flip it came in says he, but he said he would chase up the seller he bought it from and query it as he wasn't sure himself...

I don't think there are/were any matte ones either.

EDIT: looking at the pictures of the coin in the link, that's just a normal currency sixpence of the withdrawn type, worth about £10 to no more than £15 maybe.  Plenty around in similar or better grade.

I have no doubt this isn't anything special, its just odd that if it were merely a camera effect why would the seller lean on it as a selling pont (rhetorical as it's eBay)? I wonder if it really is matt to the eye what may have caused it.

Ill ask 'em for a laff

  5. A thought; Numista has a note that says they dropped the 'shield in garter' sixpence because some opportunists gold plated them to pass off as half sovereigns. I wonder if this is one of those and the plate has worn?

  6. Hello all.

Is this a thing? I cant find a reference to it after a bit of searching. Was going to ask the seller as they appear to be a coinshop but thought I'd probe here first.

Lost it's lustre evenly? Camera making it appear more matt-like and the seller is leaning into it as a selling point?

  7. Hello!

The pictured item was in a little job lot of sterling silver recently acquired. I've identified it as being made by Adie & Lovekin, 1915, Birmingham assay office. It seems Adie & Lovekin made many miniature items (sword bookmarks etc) so this could be something like that (scabbard maybe for a tiny sword), unless someone can see a function for it? It has a thin piece of metal inside, I inserted a lolly pop stick and this piece moved aside and pushed against the stick locking it in. Presumably then something was meant to be inserted into it. It's approximately 60mm in length.

I haven't been able to find anything the same but the firm made loads of stuff so this may just take time.

No goal here other than satisfying curiosity 🌞

  8. The biggest issue I have with this is how they discern that a coin has in fact been cleaned. Don't get me wrong, if it stinks of pledge and shines like the midday sun in August then yeah, okay, but if a loupe shows up some whorling in the fields potentially done many years prior to inspection how can they be sure that was a cleaning attempt and not wear through use?

Out of the blue this morning I receive a VAT invoice for £300 plus for a gold coin I bought off the Spanish mint months ago.

DHL say they paid the VAT on my behalf and now want it off me.

Have told them VAT is not payable on gold.

I know Backyard Bullion had same problem some time ago.

Would you suggest I contact Customs and Excise?

Are DHL holding the item or was it delivered as expected? My apologies if I've missed this point 🌞
